For my valance box dimmers behind the upper cabinets in the Royale, I wanted an inline dimmer with dc barrel coonecters for easy swap-out or upgrading. I ordered 4 of these from Amazon ...work great, look fair, relatively inexpensive. Liked 'em well enough to order 4 more.

For a more upscale, sleek look I ordered these black glass wall-mount dimmers. I decided against cutting them into the coach walls and went with the above, so I will use them in another project.

Got those dimmers on ebay for less than $5 over a year ago, and they work great. Nice feeling potentiometer in them. They are cheaper now in some places, as RC noted. BUT TAKE NOTE: theses dimmers are common positive and use PWM to control the GROUND side, so they will not work on some LED gauges that have a common ground inside...actually they will still operate, but will vary the ground current for the whole gauge. Anything with a separate ground will work great, and it does not need to be an LED. I'm still looking for an inexpensive common ground PWM dimmer for my gauges that have built-in LED lighting. Just picked up a model railroad controller at the DAV thrift store to experiment with yesterday, but it operates from 110V, so it may not fit the need. If not, at least I can use it on my model railroad Razz

Yeah, I did that years ago when laying the track out! It was so much cleaner than using a knife or saw, but the fumes gave wife a headache(though I kinda liked the smell). When I was about 6 or 7 years old, I had a toy/tool from Ideal, I think, that looked just like a jigsaw and used a hot wire to cut styro panels and I built all kinds of neat stuff.

My younger brother had one. We loved that thing. Must have cost my dad a couple KW on the power bill. That experience is why I keep that DIY cutter in mind. I have my old controller from the 50s --figure that it heavy-duty enough to really make a wire glow.

Back on topic, the above are all single-color dimmers.

I have several of these and have not yet had a chance to play with them,
but a possible warning to GMC owners that are Hams (and probably CBers,
also) Since these things are PWM, they are LIKELY to radiate energy from DC
to visible light. I think I will try one of mine thus weekend with the Ham
equipment and my spectrum analyzer up.....

You can get aluminum-cased models for less than $10 now. Prices on leds are dropping so much, I don't see how a retailer could stock them without taking a loss due to the write-down
