If you don't yet have a printer for Brother TZ labels to mark you wires,
etc, here's your chance:

http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/605703/Brother-Ptouch-Labelmaker-PTD210/;jsessionid=0000ELO4MzcnM3vbshuLv2QYr_X:17h4h7bfo?cm_cat=2000000020

I've had one of those for about a year, since its 15 year old predecessor
broke. It's got 'most any feature you'd want and the current sale price
makes it a "must buy".

Ken,

As usual, you are real right. If I didn't one (the second one) I'd be on that one.
Just think, you could even preprint the labels like "Red Wire", "Blue Wire"....... Wink

No, I needed the more expensive one so I could match the font style and size of a boats panel. Fortunately, that made it deductible.

On all of the Brother printers - which means most of the label makers - don't leave the cartridge in it stored in a hot location like GMC cabinets in the summer without A/C. The ink tape >may< stick to the roller which will jam the machine and break the tape. It isn't fixable, cartridge is toast.

Good idea, Mike, except that they're limiting the sale to 2 per customer.
So all of you will have to each buy one for the house and one for the
garage. :-)

OK, not I already know that you guys are gonna jump all over me 'cause this is a LOT more expensive :-),
BUT I use these things all the time professionally and this is the best bang-for-the-buck that I have found:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008ORW770?keywords=dymo%20rhino%20label%20maker&qid=1455916852&ref_=sr_1_10&sr=8-10
or
http://tinyurl.com/jqyettv

it is specifically designed for cable labeling and the best part is that they have printable heat-shrink tubing for it.

I have the Rhino, too. I bought it as an upgrade to my smaller Dymo Letratag based on recommendations here on gmcnet. The main reason I bought it was because it has decent ratings for UV-resisting labels (the polyester cassettes). It's pretty disappointing to open up a compartment and find your labels have faded away.

We used a couple of house branded ones which were actually the Brady 21 series, specifically made for wire/cable. Lifesavers when you're wiring a plant with a bunch of studios. For equipment though, we still used the Brother machines.

I don't doubt that Dymo makes some good tapes, but I've never seen them.
I'm still remembering the original Dymo tapes which "stretched" the plastic
to make the letters. :-)

The Brother TZ tapes are VERY durable -- a heat gun will shrivel them up,
but the lettering will still be visible until the substrate is completely
melted away. I've very rarely had one become illegible on the GMC,
regardless of the environment.

For anyone not yet into "Labelling", I still recommend Brother. Even if
they do follow the Gillette philosophy of "Get 'em by the blades".

Ken,

For the cost, variety and availability of TZ tape, I don't find the individual tape cost that high. When business was still good (before the depression), I probably burned through two of three cartridges a month. If you are careful about buying them, like looking for the 3 packs at Costco, (I think I won't recommend that for a casual user), there are some deals out there. No matter what though, the 1" and the specials kind of bite a little.

I did buy a cassette of TZFX - The flexible for wrapping around cables, but I gave up on it as the "KenH Flag Label" is much easier to read.

I have also applied many on weather deck places and never had one bleach out. I have seen the lamination go bad and water get in, but that label was still readable.

My machine, essential scissors, a USB cable and about a dozen tapes all live in an abandon laptop case and are ready to go on the off chance that some client just might call.

I'm currently running an exposure test on the Rhino tapes, polyester and nylon. They're facing due south, 8 ft above brackish water, in a high wind area according to me and the feds. Nothing lasts there for long except high quality plastics and non-ferrous metals. SS below 316 tinges with rust in 6-8 months there. Test labels have been there 8 months now. I'll go check them and report in.

I also have pure alum tape for the embossing-type commercial labelers for when I **really** want to be sure a label stays where I put it.

Gene,

As usual, your brevity is concise, but here I will take a small issue.
I am trying to label every wire I can even see and a lot else. Things like suspension air lines (I have a 73), water lines and anything else that might have to be identified at any time that is not relaxed.

If you only had to work on things during dry sunny afternoons, life would be a lot simpler. I have another interesting rule for the places that I do work on batteries. Battery cables are all identified (Maybe just by color, but always specific), and there is NEVER more than one cable to a battery post.
An owner had to swap a house bank 12V jar to the engine in bad weather (this is a three beer story), and got it backwards.
