Do to a long story I will not repeat here, my 1973 coach does not have body side moldings on it (any more) they are lost. I understand replacing them with a 3 inch wide flat strip of aluminum works. Counter sink the screw holes etc. to mount in place of the original. The coach was repainted and one side shows the original orange paint that was under the original moldings. The other side had the moldings removed before painting so it does not look as bad. Thus I need the 3 inch wide or more to cover up the old paint.

Questions:

1. What thickness should the strip be?
2. I notice there are many kinds of aluminum stock available so which type of aluminum should I use.?
3. I can think of three finish options, have the aluminum polished and install to look like a chrome strip, paint it, or polished or painted and then apply the stick on black rubber molding the GMC suppliers sell?

Thank you in advance for suggestion, opinions or alternatives.

George,
3” is too wide, I think it was 2” wide and 3/16” thick. Use a real good sealant when putting it together. I would rivets that the heads have been counter sinked and then filled with body filler to make everything smooth. Be sure that any adhesive that you use is paintable.

Why the aluminum strip? Could you do it with rubber molding? Mine is
only 2:" wide but I'm sure they make a 3" wide molding.
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1667/25075729146_555f1f136e_o.jpg

You're going to have to drill all the rivets and replace them with SS
countersunk ones. You will NOT want to replace that many 3/16" rivets
with a hand rivet gun. Borrowing a pneumatic riveter from work made it
do-able. If you don't countersink nothing you put on will sit flat. At
least on my '73 it wouldn't have.

The advantage to stick-on molding is that you aren't drilling extra
holes and when/if you decide to paint the coach you can remove it. Not
to mention transporting and handling a piece of aluminum strip that long.

Just how I'd approach the problem. I thought about using an aluminum
strip and the logic just didn't work for me.

Cheers!

I used the self adhesive 2" bodyside molding over the original stainless steel.
Here is an example:

Bill,
Jim B has told us that the one with the chrome trim does not seem to hold
up , so we use the plain Black one.
Doesn't look as good, but in few years out in the sun, it might be worth it.
We will sell the chrome one, but we discuss it with our customers first.

I thought 3 inches wide would cover up the old orange paint that now shows with the original early-style wide molding gone. I really do not want to have to do any painting. As I understand it, you attach the aluminum strip and next stick on the body side molding.

George,

I have attached pictures of our first coach that we did a frame up restoration. IMHPO the rub rails are a unneeded and useless item out of the past. The coaches look so much better without it, again IMHPO! As stated by others, the latest available materials available for the rub strip are not as durable at the original that was installed by GMC. That said it does take some time and proper installation of the aluminum strip (2” wide X 1/8 thick). If done correctly it blends the strip area so that it is almost invisible in a painted coach. 73 thru very, very, very late 76 coaches had the gap where as the 77 & 78 coaches used an “H” aluminum strip to join the upper and lower body sections. You will have to clean up the area where the strip is going to be installed so that bonding/sealant agent, in this case a paintable seam sealer will stick to both the body and the new strip. This late spring or early summer I will be doing the installation of a aluminum strip to cover the body gap on our 75 Avion. I will do a photo album to capture the installation.

The following pictures show the strip area on our 77 coach which was a 4 color paint with all painted graphics.

The next picture show a close up of the GMC 4D graphic on the front and rear logo areas of the coach. Each color used on the coach is represented in the Logo.
