I'm visiting my sister and borrowed her computer - Windows 10 and using Chrome. I hadn't logged on in quite a while, and now that I'm logged in I can't log out. Same issue when I went online with Microsoft Edge browser. The logout button does nothing in both browsers, everything else works. It seems the forum is identifying the computer as I can log on and off through my phone without issue.

The GMCnet forum Help section has this to say:

"How FUDforum uses cookies?
Normally FUDforum uses cookies to store a small bit of information that allows the forum to see if you are logged in or not. If for some reason your browser does not support cookies, FUDforum will instead use sessions, which do not store any information on your computer. During the login process you can choose to bypass the cookie system and opt for the session system, this is recommended if you are using a public terminal. Doing so will prevent the possible identity theft, which may occur if you do not logout after using the forum. In most cases however, you probably should leave cookies enabled as it is much more convenient in the long run. For example, you will not need to login each time you visit the forum.

How to remove FUDforum cookie?
To remove the cookie set by FUDforum, simply click the logout link and it will automatically delete the cookie."

I've never noticed a check box or whatever on the login page that lets you "bypass the cookie system", and as I mentioned the logout link does nothing.

Anybody know how I can log out so I'm not online whenever my sister is online? And, no, the option to buy the computer from her is not viable! Wink

I think your issue is not a failure to log out. You are automatically logged out when you disconnect and a short period of time has expired. I think your issue is that you have told the machines that you are using to remember your password and log in for the next time you access the GMCnet URL.

I regularly use 6 different machines. On the 3 that are personally mine I tell the browser to remember my userid and password. On the 3 public use machines that I use at the airport I do not tell the browser to remember my userid and password. On the three that I own I am automatically logged in. On the other 3 public use machines I have to enter my userid and password each time.

I do the same for the network management applications of the various access points, bridges, and routers in the network that I manage. I never tell the browsers to remember the ids and passwords of the backbone devices. I do let certain users log in and see their particular remote bridge or router that services their location only. Many times they want to see their own receive and transmit levels and speeds. They also sometimes want to change things in their personal routers. This system works well because they can only screw up their own location and they can not affect other network users.

So what you now need to do is to go to the machines that you do not want to log in automatically and erase the cookie(s) associated with GMC web site. Most browsers have a feature called something like password manager. I am assuming that "password manager" log in data is stored in a cookie. I have never had to fix this problem in the past so I could be wrong about where the login data is stored.

Go to the help area for your browser and search for something like "remember password" for additional information.

Richard,

Can't you just delete all the cookies from her browser? I use CCleaner to
do that periodically anyway. It may not be a default setting, but it's
easily selected. If you're not familiar with CCleaner, just Google and
download the free program. Has a lot of great features, but the one you
need is first on the menu. You can review the locations to be cleaned to
be sure cookies are selected before you "Analyze" and "Clean". It's a fast
process so I do it about weekly.

Hi, Ken. I have a simple algorithm for creating passwords that makes remembering them easy enough, and I simply never save passwords. As I'm borrowing this computer, I made certain nothing was being saved. I went through the browser settings and deleted all saved cookies, cleared cache, etc., several times.

A search of the GMCnet for posts about trouble logging out wasn''t fruitful. The only pertinent reply post suggested that it was a browser issue, and what I'm experiencing is not, as it's occurring with both clean installs of up-to-date MS Edge and Chrome browsers. Eugene said it was a bug with the forum software, and I'm wondering if Windows 10 is part of the issue.

I took a look at the FUDforum Bulletin Board Software forum (link at the bottom of every GMCnet page), and that forum seems fairly moribund. I figured I'd ask here before I posted over there about this. Thanks for the reply.

Hello, Ken. Chrome has a Clear Browsing Data function among their tools, and I selected all items under "Obliterate the following items from: The Beginning Of Time". I love that - a browser with a sense of humor. It deleted everything within its power to no avail. Same with MS Edge.

I believe the issue is on the forum end of things. The forum server may have recorded my MAC address or set some persistent non-removable cookie on this machine, and if this computer is online, I'm online as far as the forum is concerned.

I am using Windows 10 on this machine with Firefox and do not see the issue. I use Win Xp and Win 7 with Firefox on two other another machines and do not see the issue. There is one machine at the Airport the airport that is Win 7 and Chrome and I have no problem there. So none of my machines are exactly the same as yours.

I still think it is a cookie issue and cleaning out the cookies might take care of it. I am afraid that I am not much help.

It is very easy to see who is online. At the moment the forum has only one user logged in. Me.

You are not currently logged in.

Look at the first screen in the forum for a list of logged in users. Note: There is a slight delay of updating the list so you may not see yourself in the list when you initially sign in. Come back to the list after a brief delay and you will be included in the list.

I just ran ccleaner that Colonel Ken Suggested. I see that under the options there is the option to "remove saved passwords" listed under each browser type. I ran ccleaner and the next time that I opened the forum it forced me to log in. This machine is one that I normally have set to log in automatically.

This may or may not be useful here...
It removes the automatically checked 'Stay signed in' in g-mail.

Hey Ken & Ken. When earlier you saw me as not logged in it was because I had turned off wifi on my sister's computer. Turn it back on, and I was signed in, even after using CCleaner and rebooting.

The FUDforum reading I did pointed to the always signed in thing as a bug, and Eugene confirmed that. Odd that when I clicked on LOGIN nothing at all happened. All the other buttons and links worked as they should.

A few minutes ago I went back online with my sister's computer and backed up to a login screen and input garbage, which it rejected, and rinsed and repeated. Then I was finally logged out. So somehow those failed login attempts reset whatever was refusing to be reset before.

Richard
