JMHO, but I don't think it matters. When I couldn't conveniently find what I wanted in ABS Black, I used PVC white with no issues.

Bob,

The ABS is more rigid.
The two can be compatible is you use the correct cement.

I had a heck of a time finding the Black ABS for my black tank redo. One Lowes about 50 miles away had an entire aisle of it. Every fitting, shape, and size you could want. I have heard that its still used on mobile/modular homes. The area of that Lowes is in a developing spot of the state.

PVC needs a primer before the glue. ABS doesnt. ABS can deform in higher temps. ABS has a higher impact strength. (Might be good if you bump it on a holding tank) but I dont want to find out....

Be aware that there is a size difference in the two white PVC pipes. The
drain pipe is different than the sched. 40.

Having made some changes to the 40 year old main vent and all the drains in two bathrooms, I can offer this: They were interchangeable, at least the drain pipe and fittings from 40 years ago and new sked 40. The drain pipes and fittings had a thinner wall, but the pipe OD was the same. So I mixed and matched pipe and fittings without problems.

Home construction went to PVC due to cost. In the larger sizes both ABS and PVC have a cheaper pipe product called 'foam core'. Universal cements are not as strong a joint, but are generally OK. They are adhesives and do not fuse the fittings to the pipe. ODs are the same for thinwall, S40, or S80 but there are some bastard specialty sizes out there, such as 2" OD central vac pipe.

The Code only permitted the mixing of abs and pvc in one location, at the termination of the home waste and city sanitary sewer. The adaptor 'glue' really doesn't make a good mechanical bond although many use it with acceptable results. If you can source fittings of similar materials you'll be better served with a better job, IMHO.

I believe ABS is softer not harder allowing it to flex in mobile applications. it does cost more so it is not used in homes.

also, it doesn't need primer because the glue kinda melts the two parts.

FYI our grills are made out of ABS and you can use the glue and ABS pipe to repair them. Smile

Everything plastic in our GMC's seems to be ABS. I've fixed all kinds of cracks with the fiberglass cloth, and ABS cement. Then put strips along edges, and around screw holes so it won't crack. I've used up 6 cans, and 1/3 of a yard of cloth. Fantastic stuff to work with.Bob Dunahugh78 Royale Mouse House
