Hi Everyone,

I finally found some extra time and money to fix both engines on my 1976 & 77 GMC's. My mechanic friend looked over each engine and noticed that someone had replaced the 455 with a chevy 454 engine on the 1976 model after he checked the casting numbers and had started rigging up some type of fuel injection system (will get more info later on that). Bummed out about that because I thought since the owner lived in Calif when I bought it, that it was legal but I guess not..!! We have a rebuilt 455 standing by to replace it with but he also stated there is no smog equipment, as if it had all been removed... Now I am faced with trying to figure out where to go and find whatever parts are missing. My question is: Does anyone have a list of these parts that are required to help it pass the silly California smog check...? My first thought was trying to locate a junkyard but I am afraid that all I will find are worn out parts....

Now as far as looking at the 1977 model, he concluded someone blew the engine and he can rebuild it while still in the vehicle but it also was missing all of the smog equipment. My concern here again is What Parts...? I have no idea what I am even searching for...? Obviously I will need a smog pump and that should be a new unit instead of any old one I happen to find at the junkyard... But I am very open to any ideas on how to solve these issues.

Sincerely,

- A.J.

A.J., Check in the motor manual for your year.
But IIRC the 3 smog items that I can think of is the PVC (positive crank vent), and the heated air intake into the air cleaner,
and the TVA valve for the distributor vacuum advance.

No A.I.R. system (air pump and system). These are the items that I have on my 75 model.
As far as rebuilding it in place. Well the top end yes. The lower end, I don't see how. Engine has to be separated to remove oil pan,
so you might as well take it out.

Manuals can be downloaded at http://www.bdub.net/manuals/index.html

Would like to see pic of the 454 in there, about the oil filter, and oil pan.

Why dont you check with me on this befor you waste time looking around as
we do these frequently .
It will cost you nothing to call and have me show you what it takes to pass
the BAR test.

There is not much smog stuff on a GMC. On top of the list Adrien gave you, there is a charcoal canister in the evap line from the gas tanks. I am wondering if this mechanic really knows what smog items belong on the coach.

Wouldn't it be easier for you to ask "the mechanic" what he thinks is missing. After you get that list, we or Jim K, could try to locate the missing items.

Jim K., who posted just before me, will be a good resource of information for what does and does not belong the coach. He is in California and does work for SMOG tests all the time. He also is a great source for new and used parts if needed.

As a side note, The EGR valve mounted on the intake manifold of 455 engines of that era was not installed used on GMCs. So do not let the mechanic tell you that it is missing.

Half or the Smog people have no way of knowing all he things.
We select ones that are sharp enough to look them up.
The biggest myth is to lean the fuel mixture.
The first couple years I learned a lot and I had tremendous coaching from
people in the smog testing.
I tell people not to take it for testing until I coach them first.
We recommend not to hook up to the State Computer until you have a courtesy
sniff.
They will charge twenty five for it and give you the result, which you
send to me then I know what should be done.
I have found that a engine that cannot pass the test is a sad engine.
Even my 540 Cad passes the sniff test but fails the Visual test when they
see the twin Turbo,Intercooler, Fuel Injection, and no pre heat intake.

Well, here is a pic of the 454 engine that I took this morning. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ro6pexqmjlh2wef/2016-02-12%2010.02.14.jpg?dl=0

There seems to be some kind of fuel injection system on it and I am not familiar with it so if anyone recognizes it, please let me know... Also, is it just for a 454 or can it be used on the 455 engine we are replacing it with... A huge Thanks to Frank Condos for letting us borrow his engine trolley system and I will try to find directions on here later and figure out how to put it together... I lost the hand written ones Frank originally gave me but I remember it needed some grade 8 bolts and nuts...

It appears to be a 455 the injection system is an old AirSensors unit I have one installed on my coach and have run with it for the last 120000 miles in 14 years with only minor problems I gave dub a PDF copy of the manual for the injection system that he has on his site.

The Air Sensor system were certified by CARB ( California Air Resource
Board) many years ago , but later voided when they realized that it can be
adjusted with a screw.
They use a Hot wire to measure the volume of air going in, but the wire can
get dirty and gives poor readings.

I would take Jim k's offer if I were you . Your mechanic is mistaken that is an olds engine not a big block Chevy.

Service and Parts Manuals have the info on what is needed for emission parts. The manuals are available on line in PDF form for download.
Don't know if it is cool to post links from another forum.

Remember also that a GMC Motorhome is classified as a "Truck" and Trucks didn't start getting smog control until 1979. My dad had a 1979 that still ran regular (not unleaded) gas.

The only thing they checked for in Arizona was the fuel cap and ran it on a dyno. Had no clue what else to look for. What the guys already stated above is correct.

GMC's also don't have catalytic converters either. Never did.
