specified amount of vacuum (adjusted at the mechanism) is present while
also telling the trans to shift up as well?

3 things control the up and downshifts: the modulator, the governor and the kickdown switch. When they are unmolested, they do a great job of controlling when and how the shifts happen.

So how would that blow an engine?? Even with the kick down activated, the trans will still upshift when the maximum RPM has been reached. In fact an unmolested trans will upshift even if the shift lever is still manually placed in a lower gear.

Didn't Beuhler (sp) turn these engines up to obscene speeds in jet boats? And they kinda survived.

I don't see how you can reach those rpm's unless your transmission has been modified. In first or second the trans will upshift before that regardless of what the gear shift position. If it's in 3rd you may be ready for take-off !

Olds engines never approach those rpm's in a motor home. They sure do in
inboard boats equipped with propellers as well as jet drives. Also in
manual transmission equipped cars. I built 455 Olds engines for ski boats
and gill netters and cars long before I ever worked on a GMC Motor Home.
That is where I learned what will break one of these engines.
