Hi Jonny,
I couldn't agree with you more. If you have a Qjet and HEI that work well for you, or budget is a major consideration and the enhanced drive is not important, stay with what you have. If you have a less than good carb or distributor the change will likely be more than enough to justify the cost.
This FiTech EFI offers a large matrix computer based self learning process and lots of manual input for spark control with a two wire locked out distributor if you want to quest after the bleeding edge of mileage or performance. I am not interested in anything but a reliable, nice to drive GMC experience without any drama or tinkering.
Without a factory engineered knock sensor system and very accurate exhaust gas temp sensors that work 100% of the time I would not want to take A/F ratios up very much, or over advance very far during lean cruise, in a quest for a small increase in MPG. But, that is just me. Sharon and I measure our time in our two GMCs by smiles per mile far more than miles per gallon, but we both enjoy the vastly improved drive experience offered by these self learning EFI units. bTW, tonight we just enjoyed a thrilling sun set at Picacho Peak State Park about 50 miles from Tucson, AZ. Life doesn't get much better than this......
Where we all drive has far more to do with mileage than anything in the technology from what I have been able to determine. If you drive in the flat areas of the country mileage will be higher than for those of us who drive in the mountain west. If you drive slower mileage will be higher. If you have a lighter coach mileage will be higher. If you drive more smoothly and accelerate more slowly mileage will be higher. If you drive with higher vacuum your mileage will be higher. Etc.

Well, I do about 9 towing and about ten bobtailed in my 23' with a really scurvy looking Q-jet which I kind of think is the original. Alls I've done
is tighten the mounting bolts and the screws that hold the air horn on, thereby stopping the fuel weeping. It looks like it does about 6K miles a
year. At $2 gasoline, an increase from 10 to 11 would save me $110 a year. Even the FiTech doesn't pay out, JimK's fancy one doesn't either. At
engine build, it might be a thought. Right now, me and the Q-jet will continue to negotiate.

Can attest to the beauty of Picacho Peak State Park sunsets as Darlene and I were just there in December. Now the ones we have seen on the west coast of the Baja California Sur have been spectacular. Now that we are on the Sea of Cortez we must get up and experience the sunrise. And as you say Get out there and drive them. Presently running a qjet and enjoying the fuel prices.

After I tightened the Qjet up and set the choke, two steps, spin it, and vroooom. I'm sure the high idle cam aces out a large amount of ozone which an FI setup wouldn't. However, some of the optimizing left to the neophyte owner (me) appears to have the same ability as some of the later audio proc amps had - suddenly you have the ability to really screw it up if you aren't careful. Not that I don't like the FI idea, I do. But given the resources of a fixed income and the ability to apply sweat equity to what I have, I propose as the old maid said to dance with the one what brung me.

I spent a fair bit of time with my Q-jet, I have a Wide band O2 and an EGT, so I can tell pretty much whats going on.
I got good at adjusting the F/A mx using the power valve and jetting. I was able to lean it a little bit from factory settings, but I could tell I was loosing power if I went lean at all.
So I'm like 2 jet sizes down from factory right now and it runs nice. Better that factory settings.

Keep in mind, that 10% ethanol can be same as leaning the mixture as it
takes more alcohol to run an internal combustion engine.
What lot of people do not understand about a Lean Run is that since there
is lot less fuel being run, temperature drops, so there are several running
the EBL Flash drive in lean run mode when they are cruising.
First time I heard of this, I raised the question and received answer that
satisfied me on Lean run.
We get increase in milage with out going Lean Burn, as the Ignition timing
curve is so superior as it is receiving several data allowing more advance
under different condition without preignition.
Fuel delivery is only a small portion of power and milage,50-60% is in the
ignition timing.
