Considering that one of the successor of the T1, the T5 in my garage had
an MSRP of around 75k, 100k for renovating a much cooler car doesn't
sound too obscene :D

Looking at Samba pricing tells me, that Volkswagen renovation prices
aren't that outrages. I am pretty sure, the Volkswagen technicians
aren't producing results any worse than the stuff that's available on Samba.

A T-2, (or even T-3) is remarkably simpler to restore to these price levels
than a GMC. This market is hot right now.

Why do you think it is simpler to restore the VW transporters than it is
to restore a GMC?

Fewer systems. A basic T2 or T3 has a single air cooled motor and a transmission. Engine heat? Yes, air conditioning? No. Now think of all the systems in a GMC motor home. Start with 2 engines, 2 air conditioning units, two electrical systems. All the house systems, the varying materials. The inside of a standard T2 or T3 is pretty simple with 2 or 3 rows of van seats. A GMC? 2 cockpit, 5 sofa type seats (depending on floorplan). Now consider exterior renovation. The simple size of a T2 or T3 has nothing on the amount of body work a GMC could need.
It's not even comparable in terms of complexity and hours of work. Of course a lot depends on the base condition of the vehicles, but generally speaking, a T2 or T3 VW van is pretty simple compared to a just about any motor home.

I agree that the cosmetics and rarity of the transporters are driving part
of the jump in values. Seam rust is a demon. But electrically, much
simpler, the engines are very simple - even a late T-3 with Digifant. Lots
of suppliers for parts in ranges of prices. Some VW parts are made of
unobtainium.
The GMC has a lot of moving parts and sub-systems (water, waste, generator,
HVAC, electrical, appliances) They benefit from strong support groups, and
well intended (but inexperienced) previous owners make restoration
interesting.
I like them all, each for different reasons.

Peer,
Unless it is a VW Camper there are no house systems and even if it is a camper the systems in the camper are FAR simpler than the
GMC.
My Dad had a VW Camper that Helen and I borrowed for a tour of the western USA back in the 1990's we only used the camping features
a few times and stayed at motels because the camping features were really rudimentary.
For the record I spent just over $14,000 USD to restore my Dad's T-3. It was fender off / on chassis restoration. In my opinion
doing a concours restoration on a VW is nuts UNLESS it is a VERY rare model.
