I know alum wheels from the late 90s dodge 2500/3500 fit and widen stance, but will Steel from same vintage also work.

I ask because I believe the steel are a 7" wheel width and give more tire options

thanks

They would not be hub centered. The lug nuts and studs would be doing all the work. May have trouble getting the rims in the center of the wheel.
Wider rims may cause clearance problems for the rear 4 wheels, especially on the 73 and early 74 models.
Just my take, based on many earlier discussions on the net. Late model GMC/Chevy Dually Steel rims will also not fit on the front of the GMC, unless you also use the available spacers. They will work on the rear 4 wheels.

I can't say with certainty that the steel wheels will fit, but I don't see why not. I have been running the alloy, 16" X 8" Dodge Truck rims on the front (only) for about six years and over 20,000 miles now with NO issues. The fact that they are lug centered does not seem to be a problem at all. The alloy wheels fit around the 80mm calipers, steel wheels are an unknown in that regard.

I don't think they would work well on the rear positions due to the different offset. But, on the front, as long as the inside of the rim clears the brake assembly, they should fit.

I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but if you use tapered lug nuts I don't see any need for hub centering. I also feel that with hub centering, non tapered lug nuts with washers are also fine.

Erich,

The Dodge Steel 16x6 (with dome center)do fit front and rear. The alum rims do bolt on to the rear hubs, but the width and offset makes then not usable.
I'm using Dodge steel rims with a spacer ring to make them hub center. Over the rims I'm using a tension (reinforcing) ring with tapered
lug nuts, the tension (reinforcing)ring is 1/4 thick x 4.567 id x 8-1/4 od with tapered bolt holes. From Chevy/GMC 1 ton duallys.
Pic of what they look like below.
http://www.millertire.com/products/wheels/parts/reinforcing-rings/8-hole-wheel-reinforcing-ring/

Because of the ID of the tension ring (4.567), the centering spacer can't work its way out of location.
Used rims need to be checked on a lathe or tire-balancer (or ?) for run out.
You can't use taper nuts to bolt center on The Dodge rims, the holes are made for flanged nuts.
Weather that's good enough to center, I can't say.

Thanks, i think i will have to find a set and dry fit before adding tires. Good catch on the 80mm. I do have those. What size tire you run on the 8" width

I have been running a 255/70R16 tire (BFG All Terrain). It is wider and only slightly taller than the 225/75s on the rear. Next time I replace the front tires I will probably go with a 245/70R16 Cooper that was not available last time I needed front tires. Jon Roche runs these on his 16 X 8 Dodge rims.
