I have received my three heathen chinee cameras. Now I need a solution which does a horizontal screen split and a vertical screen split using NTSC video input. I propose to put the backup camera on the top half of a small display, and the two rear mirror mount cameras on either side of the bottom half. The cameras, at 8 bux each, are just over half an inch square, run on 5V, and output NTSC video on a 75 ohm line. I could build up one 5V supply, but three pin regulators are so cheeep it's probably simpler to just run one for each camera and feed them house battery for power. Probably less expensive than wires to each from a common supply. It looks like a salt shaker with a piece of window glass epoxied to the top may well make a nice waterproof mount/heatsink for them. Or a cheap small waterproof flashlight with the guts removed. Anybody got a couple of small MagLites kicking around?

Johnny,

I just canned one of the little 1" OD x 3" LED flashlights with the rubber
covered push button on the end opposite the 9 (or so) LED's -- take 3 AAA's
in a holder. Sounds like just what you need. I've probably got one or two
more. I'll dig that one out tomorrow & look for more.

Is dark blue anodized OK? :-)

Johnny, Harbor Freight free LED flashlights would provide an excellent container. Hope Ken can find his. I just tossed 3 out. It is cheaper to get another one than to replace the batteries.

Hadn't thought of those. If Ken has a couple, they'll do handsomely. We got them six to a package at work, and just hung one in each rack. When they quit, hang another one, not worth it to even look at the batteries. They should do fine.

Johnny,

I found the dead flashlight I trashed, but no other inoperative ones. Send
me a mailing address & I'll try to get it out tomorrow. Unless you've
already found a couple of dead ones at work.

Darn, I'm upset! Not the first time, by any means, but this is absurd!!! I
want SOMEONE to explain to me what kind of trade agreements our so-called
representatives have "negotiated" for us. It's well known that they are
not advantageous to us by any means, but the trivial situation I'm about to
describe dramatically illustrates what a rip-off we're experiencing:

IAW this thread, I found the inoperative flashlight that Johnny wanted to
try as a housing for his video camera. I found it and put it in a padded
envelope to mail to him, less batteries. I just returned from the post
office where I paid $2.54 for "cheapest way" postage to him, 171 miles
away, here in Georgia.

Now the totally incomprehensible:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-9-LED-Mini-Ultra-Bright-Torch-Flashlights-Torch-Blue-Aluminium-G-/351624178821?hash=item51de6f2c85:g:s74AAOSwX~dWj7F3

That's right -- he could have ordered virtually the same item, brand new,
with FREE SHIPPING from Shenzhen, China, for $0.72!!!

How can that be? Even if they want to give the product away, how can they
ship it to the US, then pay the US Postal service to deliver it for LESS
THAN WE PAY USPS???

Makes NO sense to me. Even though I take frequent advantage of it, it's an
outrage which MUST BE CORRECTED if we are to survive as an industrial
society. Multiply even these trivial examples by their number and we're
talking real money. Just imagine what the big-buck transactions look
like!!!

Rant off -- temporarily.

Which one of Les Miserables running will even pretend to do anything about
such as this?

Ken,

If I remember International Trade 101 correctly the only thing that is illegal is if a country sells a product in the USA for less
than what it sells for in their country the USA is OK. If they do sell it for less in the USA it's called Dumping.

The Chinese government subsidizes the postage, HOWEVER, I agree with you that unless the Chinese government pays the US government
to deliver the package (which I doubt) it is WRONG!

Ken,

I screwed up the last message it SHOULD read:

If a product is sold in the USA for less than it is sold in the country of origin it is called dumping and is illegal.

Ken,

As I understand it, there is an international agreement that if an item is
shipped
parcel post, the shipping country collects postage fees and the receiving
country
delivers it for free. Apparently the Chinese government subsidizes postage
on
packages shipped to the U.S. Since almost all the packages are coming our
way, guess whose postal service is getting stuck in the butt? The Chinese
government wants do eliminate any manufacturing in this country, as do the
scuzzballs getting rich importing Chinese products. Rant, rant, rant!!!

Gary,

That's sort of what I fear is going on -- but I haven't yet found any
evidence to substantiate nor refute it. Which is another port of the
reason for my rant -- the secrecy, or at least absence of wide
dissemination, about these "world saving" trade agreements. Like the
recent Pacific agreement which was Top Secret+ until it was accepted --
then it was apparently downgraded to Secret, since we've really heard
nothing about it. If it's such a great deal, why isn't it being broadcast
so we can all celebrate.

If a government paying, or subsidizing, postage/shipping of their country's
products to another country, how is that different than selling in the
receiving country more cheaply than in the receiving country which has no
such subsidy for its own vendors? That is, our industries are being
royally screwed. And once again, we're not being informed of it.

I WANT ALL THIS CHANGED! But who'll do it???

Sadly, with a few exceptions, I suspect I'm preaching to the choir. :-(

Rant temporarily off.

Ken H.

G'day,

A very good friend of mine here in Australia started a business selling household decorative items made outside of Australia.

I thought it was really funny when his wife got upset about a "Buy Australian" ad campaign funded by the Australian Federal
Government and said it bordered jingoism!
