My 4k watt Onan seems to have two ignition coils. One sitting on top of the engine connected to the plugs. One behind the circuit board disconnected.

I can only get the motor to turn over, but not start, by jumping the solenoid to the starter. Jumping various terminals on circuit board does not get it to start or turn over.

I also have no power to the coach interior. But there is power to the Onan.

Have a look on bdub's site, for Duane Simmonds procedure for troubleshooting the Onan.

Manchenic,

The one behind the circuit board is probably original and the one on top is a Harley coil that won't fit in the same place.
It also sounds like you have board issues. A dinosaur board is a good fix.

Its a fed up or jaded dinosaur. :)

Actually its a control board made by
the Dinosaur Electronics company. They make control boards for older equipment which
may no longer be available from the manufacturer. Such as Onans, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.

see http://www.dinosaurelectronics.com

Jim Kanomata at Applied GMC also sells their boards.

Depending on year, we have the one with a plug and pigtail to facilitate
hooking up without disconnecting each wire.

Meter to see if 12V is getting to the + terminal on the coil. If not you can run a temp clip lead there. A meter and logical troubleshooting is the right way to do it. Throwing parts at it is not. When you say no power in the coach are talking DC?

Thanks JohnL for your kind reply.

I had no DC power to the coach inside.

I can now get DC power inside the coach by applying a DC power/booster pack to the fuse box inside the cupboard beside the fridge. What is the best solution and how do I turn off the water pump?

Thanks.

You turn the water pump off with the pump switch. Sounds like your DC power converter either isn't there or isn't working. Which may be due to something as simple as an open switch, tripped breaker, or blown fuse. Wanna let us know what year and what model you have? It would make suggesting ideas easier.

Do you have 12V power to the living area when the main engine is running? If so, your isolator is working and you have a very dead or discharged or dry house battery or bad connections at that battery, but the 12V house bus is good. Trying to armchair diagnose with minimal info here.

I cant find the switch for the pump. Switches above the kitchen sink are painted shut.

Jerry,

Now that we know what you coach is, I can tell you that all '73 23s had a single potable switch in the galley about between the sink and the stove. None were above the sink as such, but at the doorway are three light switches and a single that look like that but farther aft is the potable pump. If it is painted "shut", it will remove easily with the two screws, but be careful as those screws are in now soft masonite panel and the can be stripped out very easily.

Matt
