First I would like to thank Gary B , Jim, Chris, Terry,Gene, larry and many more for their suggestions to my problem. Traced the problem to intermittent signal from the alternator. I cleaned the Onan wiring plug that the control board plugs into and it seems to have cured the problem. I have sprayed this plug with CRC 2 26 twice a year, as per Duane Simmons, for many years. Love the old Onan.

Congrats. Still have not figured mine out yet. Seems to be either the relay or the board. There were some good directions for testing both but it has not made it to the top of the priority list. I hate intermittent problems.

When it happens you have to pull the thin wire from the starter to the relay at the faston terminal. If it stops grinding, it's an electrical issue, board or relay. If it keeps grinding it is a sticky starter. I had the sticky starter. Removed and cleaned and used a very thin film of Synpower grease on moving parts. Been fine since.

Gene, I don't have a primer switch but I do use a jumper from 5 to 9 to prime. It doesn't see to make any difference in the starter hanging up. When I pull the small wire off it stops so I suspect relay or board as John suggests.
