Interesting Ken. The new distributor is from Dick and had no such grounding facility

.........

And Dick puts a stud with a ring terminal on every one he builds so all you have to do is add the wire to the block when you install it.

I glad you found the problem.

Jerry, sometimes it is the bone head obvious stuff that trips you up. That
finish on the s and j block is not paint, but is a great insulator. I,
like, Duck Paterson, prefer separate grounds on electronic stuff.
Operating voltages are more critical on them. When running down the road
with stuff like inverters and dash a/c operating, voltages vary quite a
bit. Anyway, hope you found your demon. Still in hospital till tomorrow.
Had a bout of acute diarrhea. No damn fun at all. Still trying to
regulate my heart rate too.

Look on the bottom of the distributor. There should be a threaded 6-32 or 8-32 stud sticking out of the bottom. It really is a bolt threaded all the way through from the inside to the outside of the lower casting. I believe is mounts a plate or something inside the distributor. I have forgotten what it mounts inside for sure.
