I have a 56 Studebaker Golden Hawk that needs a new oil pump. A special plate has been developed to adapt the Olds high volume pump to the Packard engine. What better group to ask than you. What brand of High Volume pump has the group found to be the best replacement oil pump for your 455/403 engines?

Thanks in advance. Razz

IS there anyone besides Melling?

Certainly the only one I've ever used & never had a problem with one.

Doesn't the Hawk have a Studebaker 259 or 289 engine?

The 56 Golden Hawk had a 352 Packard engine. 57 and later Hawks had the 289 Studebaker engine. The Packard had a reputation for a weak bottom end so a high volume oil pump might be a good idea.

1955 was the year that Studebaker and Packard merged, so the 56' GH has the 352 Packard engine in it. I've been around this car for over 50 yrs and had not heard that the bottom end was notoriously weak. It did have a notoriously bad oil pump and the 352 was notoriously very heavy which had a rather negative effect on the handling of the car because of all of that weight on the front end. So in 1957, Studebaker went from the 275hp 352 stone to a lighter supercharged 275hp 289cid. Same HP and torque, but much lighter front end with the bragging rights of being supercharged. A little over 4K of the 56GH were produced and only around 600 remain. Gonna pass this one on to one of the grand kids.

Thanks Ken. Ordered a Oil pump kit and Melling pump last night. After 15 yrs of sitting in my tuck-under garage (heated and AC'd) I hope to be driving it again this summer...that is IF the GMC doesn't take up to much of my time.

Seems like a notoriously bad oil pump might produce a reputation for a weak bottom end. I have definitely seen some 352 Packards that had a rod knock. I am a fan of Studebakers and owned quite a few with the Studebaker V8 engine. I raced a 54 and a 57 on a 1/4 mile dirt oval back in the early 60s. From racing them on dirt I can also attest that Studebakers have rear axles that are prone to twist off at the keyway for the brake drums.

The issue with the pump was poor design in that the bottom plate of the pump would warp under the stress of higher RPM's and draw air into the oil. This then had a direct effect on the hydraulic valve lifters making them clatter. The fix was...get this....a 1" thick bottom plate on the pump to reduce flexing, or...in more recent years using an adapter plate to adapt the Olds HV pump. Some owners tried adding oil making it 1-2 qts over full so that the pump would suck oil rather than air, but then ran into crank interference with the oil and a lot of excess crankcase pressure. JFWIW

I ask this group because of the Oldsmobile connection. Want to be sure I get the best oil pump available.
