I was able to cross something off my list which was the sloppy, loose tilt column on our Royale. Id say I had better than a 1/4 inch of play in all directions. With a few great write ups from GMCers and the maintenance manual it was an easy job. Note this was the TILT COLUMN ITSELF which was loose, not any of the associated steering components outside of the coach.....


Low cost and satisfying to have this fixed. As it stood, the original ignition key was so worn down that it would easily pull out in any position the ignition cylinder was in. Since I had to remove that to get further into the column it was replaced.

As has been written up and if you google loose GM Steering there are a bunch of videos, but it was the 4 star head bolts down in the column which were less than finger tight once I got to them! Cleaned them up, red locktite to the threads and all back together. Nice and tight.

I was able to use the loan a tool at Oriellys here for the lock plate removal tool (which also had a steering wheel puller in the set). I did buy a pivot pin puller for 9 bucks. And the new ignition cylinder was 15 through Napa.

If anyone has a loose or sloppy tilt column, those 4 star bolts may be the culprit (as has been mentioned several times by folks much smarter than I am). I would say be careful and go slow when you remove the upper tilt block to get to those bolts, as there are two sets of bearings which could fall out. If you just have a worn out lock cylinder, you dont have to go too far into the column to replace it.

All in all about a 1.5 hour job as I went slow and took photos of everything so I could remember how it all came out.
