Has anyone here repurposed the old buzz box to power Ham or CB radios for a base station at the house? The Ampacity is there. Are they noisy (RF-wise)? Just asking before i go digging mine out from under a pile of crap in my garage...

Not rf, but a lot of hum. There are two cures. One is the previous, if you have a junk box full of good electrolytics, hang half a farad or so across the output. Or, you can do it the way GM did, hang about a fifteen to thirty farad capacitor (called a storage battery) across the output. The latter works best if you turn it off when you aren't using it, otherwise you'll eventually boil the 'capacitor' dry.

Johnny,
Until just now, I never thought of a LA battery as a 50 Farad electrolytic.
I don't disagree, but it never occurred to me.

Thanks guys, I was actually thinking of using a little 12V gel cell from the lawn mower to smooth things out, as well as a choke or three if needed. Good info.

The gel cell will work fine. If your 12V supply had a voltage set pot (some do some don't) set it right on 12.6 and the gel cell will last pretty much forever.
