I don't have my coach here at the moment so I cant look at it...

I purchased a new Control Board with the pick tail connector. Question is I also noticed you can purchase the control board without the connector pick tail...?

Do some Onan's come without the pick Tail connector from the factory? Or, are they all wired with the plug pick tail and plug...?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

All of the OE Onan control boards come withOUT the pigtail and connector. This is one of the common failure modes of the boards.

A Molex<tm> 12 pin inline connector - male and female - and a dozen 'flag' (right angle) push on connectors and some wire and you can make the inline connector. All the Onans I've seen in RV service had the inline connector. A couple of the older ones we use ddin't have - the wires went directly to whatever they were connected to (fuel pump, coli, etc).
The common failure modes are, the blade connector on the PC board cracks its solder connection and becomes intermittent; the wire flexes and breaks at the connector at either end; the Molex crimps or the blade connector crimps loosen and become intermittent. making up a new pigtail isn't hard.

G'day,

As they say "a picture is worth a thousand words" so here's two thousand:

http://www.appliedgmc.com/products/full/628.gif

The board on the right is what an OEM board looks like with the push on pins to which the OEM Molex connector leads plug into.

The board on the left has Molex connector and leads soldered to the board.

Regards,
Rob M.

Beats me why more folks don't do what I did many years ago when I still had
an Onan: Completely rewire it. This and a couple of following photos
don't show it very well, but it was a BIG improvement:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/4kw-onan-air-filter-26amp-3b-new-wiring/p4063.html

The fundamental wiring of the Onan is trivially simple and requires only
about 1/3 of the total length of the OEM harness. I installed a terminal
strip for the 4 wires to the remote control, then replaced each of the
flag-terminaled wires on the control board with a color coded wire directly
to its functional destination. With new flag terminals (you MUST use 3/16"
FLAG terminals to clear the board cover), board connection problems
disappeared. Eliminating the 12-pin Molex production convenience connector
eliminated most others. New ring terminals where required did away with
the rest of them. The color coding made circuit functions immediately
obvious -- there are only a few.

It's not a recommendation, but the wire colors labeled on this schematic
are the ones I chose:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/onan/p39734-kh-redrawn-onan-schematic.html

Worked for me, from 2001 to 2007, when I began the search for a better
alternative to the Onan.

Beats the heck out of me why more people don't do what I did many years
ago: Completely rewire the Onan. This and the following photos don't show
it well, but the simplification is dramatic -- only about 1/3 as much wire
is needed as in the OEM harness:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/4kw-onan-air-filter-26amp-3b-new-wiring/p4063.html

I added a 4-terminal screw block for the remote control wiring, then
replaced each of the wires on the control board with color coded
replacements directly to their functional destinations. By using new flag
terminals (you MUST use 3/16" FLAG terminals to clear the board cover)
board connection problems were eliminated. New ring terminals at the
destination components eliminated problems there. MOST of the problems
were eliminated by not including the 12 pin Molex "production convenience"
connector.

With unique wire colors for the various functions, one could tell at at
glance what each wire was for, greatly simplifying troubleshooting. While
it's not a recommendation, the colors on this schematic are the ones I
chose (ignore the fact that I had a 4kW; the 6kW is identical):
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/onan/p39734-kh-redrawn-onan-schematic.html

It worked for me from 2001 to 2007, when I began the search for a viable
alternative to the Onan.

Ken,
Thanks for that "Re-wiring" diagram. I always thought it had a fair bit of extra wiring but never sat down to figure it all out.

The one disadvantage we see with the Dinosaur board we sell with the
harness, is that it is hard to jump 9-5, 9-11
9-5 runs the pump, 9-11 the ignition and fuel pump.

So speaking of Onans - how long do y'all have to hold the momentary switch that jumps 9-5 to properly prime the fuel system for quick starting ??

I had to replace my Onan fuel pump...

With the old pump - it was 10 seconds or so. With the new pump - 20 or 30.

What could be wrong ??

Thanks,

Steve,

Did you put in a new Bendix clicker? If not, it could just be the difference in pumps. If you did, have you replaced the rubber line between the tank and the pump? When mine went bad, it took a long time to prime.

You can buy replacement boards either way. I would definitely suggest the version with the pigtail permanently soldered on--eliminates those troublesome push on connectors that always corrode.

I'm sure other GMC shops can supply them, but we have plenty of each kind
in stock and warranty them for 3years.
