Greetings and Happy New Year !

I've got a few devices to power via "accessory" power and I'd like to install a small (fused) distribution block...

My idea is to have this distribution block powered from an existing accessory power source.

Can anyone recommend a good pick-up point ??

Is a "round Tapper Kit" advisable... sure seems easy.

A very easy to pick up 12v only while engine is running is using the yellow wire in the resistor block controlling the fan in the AC Heater compartment. It is located on the driver side. Cut the wire and use it to trigger one of the very common 12v automotive relays. Use the relay to carry 12v to your added fuse panel. My coach has aux battery in engine compartment. That is where I picked up the 12v. This des not drain the engine battery while in use.
I installed your standard 12v auto receptacle in the passenger side arm rest. There is enough room in the arm rest to install 2 of these easily. Beats having "extension cords" hanging from the dash.

Hiya Gene - Happy New Year !!!!

I heard that I missed some fun times at your place recently... Manny, Dave, et al with your supervision...

Thanks for the electrical pictures. I'm gonna get the same result using a fuse box populated with these:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/circuit_breaker_fuse.jpg

I was thinking about just using an existing accessory circuit to power up the fuse box - but now i think I'll use a relay as you suggest.

Will we see you at the Lake Havasu Hot Air Balloon Festival rally ??

All good in SoCal,

Steve,

Please seriously consider what you want to run on "Accessory" power. All of that power comes from the main engine start battery. Even though you have 3 batteries, that is not one you want dead.

What I did was to add a fuse panel next to the original chassis panel (behind the glove compartment) and pick up the power from the House Bank that you also have in the right front. That is where I now get power for the radios (Stereo, Cell Repeater and at one time a marine VHF [for work] and a CB -now gone) and two ea. DC mouseholes.

Just goes to show that you can learn something new every day. I've messed with old cars and such for 50+ years and frequently had to find power to run something or the other. Until today, I had never heard of a 'fuse tap.' What a great idea!

Steve,

I used that exact same type of fuse tap to run power top my backup camera and monitor. It worked very well and made for an easy, clean installation.

Matt - good call - I'm thinking air compressor, aux vacuum pump, electric wipers, electric choke, and some cool LED trim rings around my headlights...

Most of that is already on acc power - I just want cleaner circuitry.

Kerry - glad I could show you something... your posts here have certainly helped me tremenduously.

Thanks Carl. Thanks Jerry. Thanks Gene. Thanks Tom.

The problem with these automatic resetting breakers is just that. In the event of an overload the breaker will heat up and trip but after it cools down it will reset. It will keep doing this forever. This could cause your short to result in a fire. Probably why cars still rely mainly on fuses. If you favor breakers go for the manual resetting type.
