The fun begins!

Getting ready for the Balloon Festival..........however I found a slight
issue

No clearance, or dash lights.....no idea why. Headlights work, signals
work, hazard lights work.

Blew the 4 amp fuse twice.........no idea.

Blew the 20 amp lighter fuse....no idea why.

Fun and games!

Did you work on the radio recently?
Lots of folks think the original gray wire to the radio is a ground wire where it actually a light wire that dims through the headlight switch.

If it's hooked up as a ground it will blow that fuse.

It's a strange system. Dash lights are run from the headlight switch through the fuse box with an additional fuse then back to the headlight switch. Either the headlight feed, headlight switch or fuse from the headlight switch can effect things. Does that make sense?

This is usually a shortening in the taillights or the wires leading to them. Which includes the toad lharness if you have one. Selective disconnection at the dash/light swoiitch is the quickest trace. My experience has been, the short occurs where the wire is completely non-accessible. At which point I disconnect both ends and run a new wire.

Got all the lights working except the dash/inst lights. I did have a combo
am/fm/cd/gps put in two years ago by Fry's. Maybe spend some time tomorrow
looking for that gray wire.

Does it come out of the headlight switch or is it in the wires behind the
dash?

It should be in the area of the radio. It went to the radio light in the original GMC radio but might not be used if the radio was replaced.

Any shorted bulb or bulb socket can cause your problem.

Start pulling tail, parking, side marker, and clearance light bulbs.

When you pull the various bulbs, clean both the bulb base and the socket. Then, apply a little dielectric grease to help keep moisture out. Or, go LED.

The gray wire (that was fun) was connected to a black wire coming out of the
radio/gps tapped to a yellow wire , also off the radio/gps tagged "parking
brake". No idea what id is or does, but the lights now work!

As I told you in my previous message many people think the gray wire is the radio ground as it will test as a ground with the headlights are off bus as soon as you have both the radio and headlights on it will blow a fuse.

The black from the radio should be grounded although the radio is likely grounded by the antenna lead but it is better to have a good ground through the black wire.
