I wish ALL screws had that type (Robertson) heads; they're MUCH easier to
install & remove than straight slotted or phillips (Fearson, Reed & Prince,
etc), and make more sense to me than Torx.

I'm with you on that one Ken. I have a big selection of Robertson head
fasteners. Any time I replace any tapping screws in a GMC, I always replace
them with the Robertson screws. Mostly stainless steel. I drive them with
cordless drills with the clutch. Sure makes it a lot easier to remove them
when I have to work on the coaches again. The heads lock onto the drivers
if you use high quality bits. My fastener supplier usually provides me with
the bits, as I buy 500 or more screws at a time. Local company, likes the
business. JWID.

I have been buying the square drive woodworking screws for years.
They also carry the Kreg tool screws and also metal screws.

Avion used clutch head screws: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives
When I looked at that list there are some I'd NEVER seen!

A lot of the early RVs used clutch head. My 1969 and 1972 Dodge Travcos used them.
They stripped out easier than square head screws.

I learned (the hard way) when removing case screws on my various scooters to loosenn them with a hand impact tool. The option being to strip them and then trying to drill tyhe head off a hardend screw recessed into an aluminum case.
Foolish Carriage, 76 26' Eleganza(?) with beaucoup mods and add - ons.

I think I'd seen them all; but, thankfully, most of them rarely!
Too bad about those clutch heads you're stuck with. I presume you're
replacing them with Robertson when you manage to remove them. Thankfully,
even GM Corp. didn't use them for very long.

They don't work well in a production environment. It's way to easy to snap the head off once the screw is seated.

That is why I always drive them with a cordless drill with an adjustable
clutch that slips at a preset value. Only the high quality tools have
accurate enough clutches. Black and Decker and offshore products are
useless in this application. But, your experience might vary. The really
inexpensive fasteners are problematic as well. The quality control is so
poor that one fastener will be fine and the next one will break off before
it is secure. CHEAP is not always a good thing in my experience. There
really is a difference between fasteners that are intended for critical
applications like military spec or aircraft, and common hardware stuff.

Bob,
I agree that when fastening two solid parts with a fastener such as a clutch head or Robertson head would not be a good idea,
Avion used the clutch heads to fasten "semi-hard" parts such as the cabinets, wall panels, ceiling panels, furnace ducting straps,
etc to each other or the aluminum body frame. I found them sunk into the wood frequently.
