Though I am a licensed Ham, I realize that those of us that are comprise a very small percentage of GMC owners. The benefits of radio communications are numerous however!
There is a very popular (and free) walkie talkie app for "smart" phones called Zello. iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phones are all covered. There's even a Windows application for your PC. I installed the Zello app tonight, then created a channel specifically for us. It's not completely secure, but does require a password so that should minimize outsiders from joining the channel.
I thought that I would suggest that others join and see how popular it becomes. Just think about its usefulness at rallies! The possibilities are endless really.
If you would like to experiment, install the Zello app, then search for the channel called GMC MH. The password for this channel is the city that all of our GMCs were born in - Pontiac (capital P).
I'll be listening to the channel for the next couple of hours, then again all day tomorrow.

Thanks Gene. Yes, I'm on that list. Still a relatively small number of GMC owners.
I should have been more clear in my description of Zello. It is a walkie talkie app for smart phones that doesn't require an amateur radio license. It can be used by all GMC owners! It uses the cel network, not over the air.

One of my non-GMC buds is harassing me to get another ham license, I may yet. I got one 30something years ago because at the time all the Okie radio engineers were hams. I think I used it twice. I do get some good out of the CB in my coach, mostly by listening. It's a help to know where the traffic tie-ups and wrecks are on the freeways.

When I'm in the GMC, I'm always monitoring 146.52. My wife and I use it for inter vehicle communication. Other than the GMC, all vehicles have 2 mtr and 440 capability. We have had many entertaining conversations across our travels. It is a very useful tool, especially here, with Hurricanes always a threat.

Waze on your smart phone will do a good job of it as well. As will Inrix and probably a dozen other map and traffic apps. Lots of ways to skin a cat (although I don't know why you'd want to). I'm sure we all have our favorites.

Yeah it's a great app!
Terry and I had a nice conversation this morning, then Bill from Ohio
checked in. Nice and clear communications, and no phone number needed.
I think I'll add the channel to my sig file!

Tom that's a great idea! I remembered someone mentioning a freq that they
always monitored, I'm glad that you mentioned it. I too will now be
monitoring 146.52 at home, in my truck and in the GMC.
May I propose that we adopt Tom's frequency as a "standard" GMC frequency?
Also, since the Zello app doesn't require a license or radio - just a smart
phone, any one of us with both can act as a gateway or message forwarder at
rallies, etc.

I downloaded it and at first it asks for a user name and then a password.
Do I use GMC MH as the user name and Pontiac as the password or do I try to set up my own username and password?

No, use your own user name and password. When the app is up and running,
then you can search for the GMC MH channel, and use the password Pontiac

Once I decided to set up my own user name and password the rest became intuitive.
My user name is emerystora if anyone wants to try to reach me on Zello.

146.52 MHz is considered the national simplex calling frequency in the 2 meter band of frequencies. You might say a gathering spot. Theory is that initial contact would be made there, then the conversation would move to a different frequency. My experience over the years, no body ever moves. Zello will work as long as the cell system, towers, etc., remain intact. With the cell system down how do you cover the "last mile"?
ARES stands for Amateur Radio Emergency Services, volunteer Hams providing the "last mile" in affected communities. My group directly supports the Emergency Management Operations of our county during emergencies. After Katrina, the cell system was down in affected communities for up to a month. Further, when first towers came back on line, they were eletronically restricted to first responders and local community authorities.
My GMC is the ideal vehicle for this type of operation. Self-contained, 6 Kw Genset, sleeping quarters, kitchen, bath - you get the idea. We are supposed the think of deployment for various lengths of time. The GMC covers any short or long term deployment. End of story.

Getting my coach is one of the main reasons I got my ham license. Didn't
want to be out of cell range and have a problem.
For folks interested in inexpensive but very capable radios, Baofeng
portables are around $30 each on Amazon. Covers main licensed bands as well
as the [mostly] no-license-needed FRS and GMRS bands. Depending on the
conditions these can reach for miles. They also make a good FM radio station
receiver. These are far more capable than you'd think for the price, and
many folks get into the ham world with them.
To legally use all the bands this radio covers requires at least a
technician ham license, but the test is not that difficult and study
material and practice exams are available online.
A couple of nights cramming and I"m now KM4OFM. So for less than $100 I have
2 very powerful handheld radios for emergency, campsite, and disaster use.
And some fun in between TEOTWAWKI events.
