Back in March, I posted about a Yada back-up camera that I installed on my coach:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6755-26quot-3byada-backup-camera-with-5-26quot-3b-dash-monitor-26quot-3b.html

The camera was a birthday gift from my kids and was purchased from Costco. On our recent trip to Utah, we drove through a couple days of heavy rain and the camera got water inside of the lens, making it very foggy. After checking with Costco, we returned it yesterday. That meant dismantling my ceiling and pulling the power wire out the back of the coach, etc. I pulled a pull wire in order to simplify the re-installation and was expecting it to go smoothly (which it did).

After hooking everything back up, I tested the new unit. It turned on and paired up the monitor with the camera, and seemed to be working, then it shut off for no apparent reason. I turned off the power, turned it back on, and it came back on...briefly. Even after double and triple checking all the connections, subsequent attempts produced the same result, the camera would shut off after five seconds. I emailed their tech support, but read several reviews from Amazon where others had experienced the same type of failure and were advised to exchange the unit for another one.

My dilemma is; do I continue the insanity and exchange this one for another expecting different results, or shall I get a refund and apply the money to a better quality unit (if such a thing exists)? I am leaning toward giving the Yada a third chance since I have the installation (power wiring, switch, etc) already done and won't have to start over from scratch.

Bottom line, I would NOT recommend this product. I don't know if it is a case of bad luck, or a typical case of a poorly made (in China) product with, evidently, no quality control. When it works, it gives a satisfactory view out the back of the coach and the brightness and contrast are adjustable on the monitor. I guess I'm just bummed at the time wasted on this thing, time that I don't really have.

I wonder what some of these names mean in Chinese.

Could “Yada” be some ancient Chinese commentary on your ancestors?

I know there is a Chinese curse “May you live in interesting times”. That one is already covered.

The rest of them they ship to us with little packets of silica gel….

Carl,

I have a wireless back up camera system that I got for Christmas about
eight years ago that has worked will. The camera is mounted inside the
rear window (so no water problems) and it's power comes from the backup
lights (but can be powered from any hot source with a on/off switch).
I think it cost about $77 at the time. .....and no fishing of wires.

Jim,

I wanted to use the back-up camera as a rear view camera while driving, that's why I ran power from a switch on the dash. I could have run it to the back-up lights or even the running lights (and turned on the parking lights), but I didn't expect to have to do the installation multiple times. Rolling Eyes

This camera is made to mount under or above the license plate and therefore SHOULD be water proof. The original one had a small bubble under the lense anyway and was not perfectly clear. The Yada unit goes for about $120.00 at Costco.

I have have had the same backup camera installed on my coach for about 5 months now. I have it wired to the running lights. No problems so far and we have had a lot of rain here in GA in that time.

The nice thing about buying from Costco is their generous return policy. The problem is the work it takes to replacing it as you have had to deal with. Generally Costco seems to carry better quality products. I would try another unit depending on the time it takes to replace with your install.

Carl,

If it's not going to cost you any money give it a go IF you can bring unit number 3 back and get a refund.

I'm still communicating with Winplus tech support, but I do think I will return this one and exchange it for a new one and try again. Most of the sting of the uninstall/reinstall has worn off and I'm willing to give it another chance. We'll see what their tech support has to say in the meantime.

I've been in touch with Winplus tech support. They wanted to know which "version number" I have and some details about the installation. The guy said he thought it sounded like inadequate power even though I assured him that the connections were soldered, the batteries were fully charged, and I even tested it with the engine running and the alternator charging.

He said that the version of camera I had before is able to compensate for power problems and he's going to send me one of those. Hopefully this will take care of the problem.

The jury is still out on the quality of the product, but at least they seem to have excellent customer service. I have my annual sand dune trip coming up Thanksgiving weekend, so I hope they get the replacement part to me in time to get it installed before then.

Back to this again.

I have been waiting for a replacement camera to arrive and finally emailed them yesterday to see when it might be delivered. Got an answer this morning:

Hi Carl
we are behind right now due to the holidays. It won't be there until the coming week.

I was hoping they would put a higher priority on helping resolve a customer problem, but I guess not. I guess that is too much to ask of corporate America these days. Now I have to put my ceiling back together and drive to the sand dunes with a wire sticking out the back of my coach, only to take it all back apart in order to install the camera when it arrives.

I realize it has only been a little over a week, but how hard would it have been to ship out the part the same day or the next day. It would have easily been delivered one state away in a day or two.

Bummed Sad

Carl,

Your missing why it takes so long to send a new unit to you.
New sales and their money come first.
They got your money, so your at the bottom of the list.

I'm facing the same action on an online order also.

Good luck.
