Health update
I did not believe that I would be writing another update so soon, but I
find it necessary to inform all of my family, friends, And the GMC
community why Mary and I have been out of touch for the past week.
Most of you know that I recovered thoroughly from my last two episodes, and
even made it to two Great Lakers rallies, Steve Rasmussen’s work rally, and
the Rapid City Convention.
All was back to normal/abnormal for me. Working every day, and feeling
great. Mary and I hosted our annual wood cutting/splitting, stacking party
on the last two weekends in October. Our three children and 8 grandsons
were here again to help Gramps, and enjoy a glorious sunny day in the
woods. I topped it off with 20 ounce “T” bones on the grill for all.
If you look at the pictures of my grandsons, you will probably agree that I
have now become the helper somehow.
On Sunday, Nov.1st. I started having extreme lower stomach pain. It
diminished that night, and did not return until Wednesday. I wrote it off
as the flu, and tried to work through it. BAD MISTAKE. Thursday, Nov.5th. I
was just able to get to my local doctors office and have an x-ray. I was in
excruciating pain and could not take a breath. My oxygen level was
dropping, and I could barely walk.
I was immediately sent to our local hospital emergency. 2nd. BIG MISTAKE.
They took one look at my past years medical history and back pedaled away
from me like I had the Plague. All they did was put me on heavy doses of
morphine which did nothing for my pain. My breathing was still so shallow
that the oxygen would not bring me above critical condition.
After two days of treading water, Mary and I agreed that we needed to get
me to The University of Michigan hospital where I had my Heart surgery
done. Mary went to work trying to convince the doctors of this move and an
uphill battle was forming. After long discussions and flat out refusing to
accept the local doctors orders, we were accepted at the UofM hospital.
They send an EMT vehicle, and things started looking up. Upon arriving at
the critical care center, I was met by one of the young doctors who played
a large part in my aorta replacement this Spring. He was interested in my
case, and agreed with how Mary had intervened in Flint.
He was very positive, gave us some options, and suggested they operate
immediately.
The surgeon that came to visit next was just the opposite. Full of gloom
and doom, and was hesitant to operate. She went into a meeting, and upon
return was a different person. She agreed to operate immediately, and
completed the 4 hour surgery at about 1PM on Sunday, Nov. 8th.
I have attached a gross picture of my gallbladder. She said it was almost
twice normal size, dying, hard, had inflamed everything around it, and
Gangrene was present. She did however manage to remove it through four
medium size incisions.
I thought that the pain lever would immediately drop after surgery, but it
has not. I am not complaining, because I able to go home on Wednesday,
November 11th.
I am feeling SLIGHTLY better each day and will be able to start returning
e-mails in a few days.

Dave and Mary, so glad you persisted and got the treatment you needed. It
took Bob a couple of weeks to be pain free after having his GB removed,
AFTER having a drain tube in for seven weeks the summer of 2014.
Trusting you will heal from this fast and completely.

I remember the abdominal pain when my gall bladder decided to give up the ghost! Glad you got it out, and it can take some time for the muscles to heal up. Even though they can do the surgery via laparoscopic incisions these days, the cut muscles still will be tender for a while.
Take it easy and let things heal. It will feel a whole lot better soon enough.

Dave,
Nothing done by halves, is it? So glad you are on the road to recovery, and look forward toward your feeling even better than before your recent gall bladder incident. It must have been draining energy for some time. Best wishes for a decade of so of good health. I know Dave will see this in due time. Kudos to Mary for saving a life. Touch and go.

Glad they finally decided to remove the offending part. You would think that in 2015 a bad gall bladder would be easier to diagnose following the diagnostic tree in the service manual. Take it easy Dave and only putter in the shop in small doses at first.

Sometime, when you have time to spend with Dave, ask him:
A - Would he like a refreshment?
B - Why did you decide to go all the way to Ann Arbor the first time?
Now, sit back and listen. Remember to refill as this can be a long story, and I have only heard the first half.
It is, however, a very interesting story and, as usual, you can learn a lot listening to Dave.
I just posted a "Get Well" card to Dave, and a "Thank You" card to Mary.
We are very lucky to have those two.
