I am in need is a 36 volt golf cart battery charger with crow foot plug. The 10 amp smart charger I got works for a couple of minutes then kicks the breaker. I took off with the charger still plugged up and jerked the wires out of the plug. I put them back backwards and it immediately popped the breaker. I put them back right and the charger senses the volts then kicks on as it should and starts charging at bout 36v then slowly goes to 37, 38, 39 them pops the breaker? It is a self reset but will not stay charging. The model is no longer available, and no support from maker. I just put 6 new batteries in it and I do this stupid trick. New Chinese chargers run bout 100$ for 5 amp to 300$ for 15 amp and higher..

Chuck, Any way to individually isolate each battery while charging it? Then depending upon the individual battery voltage rating, you could charge them one at a time. PITA, I know, but will get the job done inexpensively while you hunt for the high cost option.

Yes Tom, I can isolate 2 at a time and use 12v charger. PITA is SOP around here. 🙃

UPDATE ON BATTERY CHARGER
Johnny Bridges is in town working a show and stopped by to say hi. First thing He said was where is the sick battery charger? He opened it up and started trying to explain to me the inner workings using words I wouldn't even try to spell. I did smile and nod my head as if I knew exactly what he was talking about. Poked around with his meter saying a few things I picked up on like "that's good" and "that ain't right, wait a minute I had it backwards, it's ok to". "Wait a minute, don't like the looks of this, see that?" I said I did but I didn't. Then he did some magic with a rag with rubbing alcohol on it and 2 small pieces of tape. He plugged it up and it is still working. No kicking off, putting out 38V, and amp meter slowly dropping. Thank you Johnny..

Uhhhhhhhhhhh, what is putting out 38V?
Offhand, I can't think of anything on a GMC that should need 38V unless it is possibly a test point on the barbarian circuit board.

I can understand your confusion as most these days are 48V. Sorry I didn't mention it was 31 years old.

I don't want him to get the swell-head, but Johnny is a prince of a guy. He took a 4th of July, a vacation day, met me at a friend's house at Lake Lanier and proceeded to rebuild my Onan board. He tried (in vain) to teach me some things about soldering. I just nodded my head and watched him work. Spent the day working.
Later, he came and spent a couple of nights with us in our humble abode here in Americus and helped me install my Manny one-ton. We used Ken's pit while he was gallivanting out west.
Glad to call him friend.

Before we get too deep in the backslappin'.... we all tend to share what we can do. I learnt how to seal up my oil lines this weekend - Chuck understands thing mechanical. And, I would of sworn we did the rear end of Stick's coach, not the front... but I often get things reversed. Stick's "Humble Abode" has a kitchen for Elise that's probably worth more than my house - I >konw< the stove's worth more than my coach .
I'm more than happy to share what little amount of electronic acumen decades of fiddling has gotten me and perhaps save someone else from burning up the same things I've smoked over the years. It's a fair trade for the lessons I've learnt from this group. Usually one man's screwup shared saves five or six guys from doing the same thing.
I'm a little shaky about Chuck's battery charger though. We cleaned up some stuff that needed it, and forestalled (I hope) a potential short.. but nothing about which we cold say "There's the problem and now it's fixed." Which reminds me, Chuck, we didn't take the plug apart that plugs into the cart. Since it got yanked, if you haven't checked it to make sure the wires are tight, you might pop it apart and be sure. If they get loose and touch, it would give the symptoms you had.
When alls you can do is look and prod and say 'Gee I hope that's the trouble' you end up as I did with an Onan card a few weeks back. Rehabbed it and check the parts, but it didn't work on the genset. Hopefully, I'll see it in Dothan or Bean Station where there's a test bed. Obviously I missed something on it.

Johnny, yes I did get the plug connections tight and isolated. The charger works as it should. Dropped to O amps but it did take a while. Thanks..

Johnny,
ABSOLUTELY!
I'm lousy at figger'n out electrical problems, I can do it but it's really hard for me.
However, when it comes to mechanical problems I do OK especially ones that relate to pressure and flow.
The USAF figger'd that out when they made me a MECHANICAL ACCESSORIES REPAIRMAN (ABR 42251)!

Rob M.
