Actually it is all metric now. 18mm (0.71) is a bit less than 3/4” and 20mm (0.78) is a bit more. No intent to fool anyone, just to standardize sizes around the world. In the US they just round up to 32nds or even 64ths to get inches. In tools these days most all are built to a metric standard and then marked in inches for the US market. Lead screws are changed to produce inch movements but that is about all. All we need to do is follow the rest of the world and ditch this screwy inch business….. It is sooooo very much easier and far less error prone to work in metric.

Keep in mind that modern plywood has been converted to 'nominal' sizing --which translates to "they've shaved a couple of mm off of it but still call
it 3/4." In the building trades, a sheet off tar paper is required to level a butt joint between old and new.

Jerry,
Here in Australia we can get plywood that is 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 25, and 35 mm thick.
The "standard" sheet size is 1200 mm (47.24395 in) x 2400 mm (94.4879 in).
I was wondering if the sheet size changed to metric in the USA or is it still 48 in. x 96 in.?
I agree with you that the metric system is much more logical; HOWEVER, I has taken me quite a while to be able to relate to metric
measurements.
What I mean is when someone says that board is 1/2" thick I know instantly how thick it is. If they say it's 12 mm thick I have to
think about it and relate it to inches.

Yes.
We switched to nominal sizes in framing lumber long before mm arrived in the US. 2x4s around here at the turn of the 20th century were ...2x4. Now, 1.5 x 3.5.

Just FYI
The Liberal federal government of Pierre Trudeau first began implementing
metrication in Canada in *1970* .
On Oct. 19, 2015, his son, Justin, was elected as Prime Minister here in
Canada....
Metric certainly has confused me....I have to "translate" between the two.
The latest generation gives mileage in terms of, " Oh, It's pretty good, I
get almost 500 kilometers to a tank!" When asked how big the tank is, the
usual answer is " I dunno...but I get almost 500 k's out of one! "
Duh...I give up !!

About twenty years ago, we lived in a hundred year old house. I was forever buying big pieces and milling them to fit.
I remember when a 2x4 was 1-3/4x3-3/4. That was at least believable.
