While changing my oil, I noticed a cylinder shaped container ( 10 in. +- circle, container )just aft of the right front tire inboard. looks to be an airfilter ? can someone let me know what this is ? didnt get the chance to look into because I got late out and couldnt really follow any of the lines / hoses going to it ?
Thanks,
Brian

That is your charcoal filter for the fuel tank vent system. It is connected to the fuel separation valve located in the drivers side rear wheel well just aft of the middle bogy tire behind a square metal shield.

If you have the 75 & 76 Maint manual X7525 go to Section 8, Page 8-2, see Fig. 1. The description on how it works starts on Page 8-1.
If you have a different MM, then give me the Xxxxx number and I will give the page in Section 8 (Fuel tank and Exhaust system) it is on.

Brian,
I cant be sure without pictures, but I expect that is the fuel vapor cannister. Inboard, aft of the right tire is exactly where mine is on my Royale. You should have two fuel lines running into the top.

You are probably looking at the plastic charcoal canister to catch evaporative tank fumes to be sucked into the engine and recovered while running. There is a neglected flat filter element that needs to be changed in the bottom ( once every 4 decades ) common to most GM cars of the era. This filters the incoming air stream and protects the media inside. Actually it is good for a few years but most are so dirty they don't look like filter material any more.

I rebuilt mine using aquarium charcoal.
They are good for about 100,000 miles or a decade, with a host of caveats.
