At Rapid City I got a bargain on a pair of Honda seats. Today I
decided it was time to try mounting them on the electric bases I've
had under the current seats for 17 years. Removing the passenger seat
proved to be a challenge -- I had to pull some tricks when I installed
them. Even had to resort to a nut cracker on one of the 8 bolts.

The next challenge was removing the base from the Honda seat. I
couldn't figure out how to remove the plastic trim without damaging
it, so removing the 6 nuts was a 5* at a time process. The base is
now separated from the seat, but I can't figure out how to remove the
4 cables which control the floor latches and operate the manual slide
locks. Certainly I can cut them, but I'm reluctant to do that -- it
could turn out that someone else winds up with these seats and wants
those feature.

Has anyone figured a way out of that dilemma? If I could just
disconnect the cables from the latches, the rest would be easy, but I
can't figure how to do that.

How about removing the plastic trim -- is that possible without damage?

Ken H.

I cut the cables on my installation. I have a 6-way power seat bases that I used. There was a photo album on the Photo site that showed how to disassemble the seat bases. I haven’t found it yet.

Thanks, Mike. Those are great photos.

Since I won't be using the Honda tracks, our disassembly approach is a
little different. Because of my reluctance to force the plastic trim
I never got down to the cross-brace bolts. Also, my cable attachments
to the latches appear to be of a different design than your; they
probably still pull off the same way; I'll try harder. I've also been
reluctant to pull on the under-seat material at the rear; apparently
that's the easy way to make a skirt at the rear; I'll try it.

Thanks again,

Ken H.

Ken,

The pictures aren't mine. Richard Waters posted them on his site. I used them for reference when I installed my 2009 Honda seats. I used the under seat material for a skirt as Richard did.

Thanks, Mike, Richard (for your album), and Gene.

This album from Rob Allen has exactly the information I was lacking:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5087-removal-of-honda-seat-base.html

Finishing the disassembly should be easy now.

When I did mine I did not follow the writeup with drilling rivets and such. I removed (unbolted) the entire track assy from the Hondas and used 2 pieces of Unistrut to mate them to the GMC track/ swivel mechanism. I lightly trimmed the Honda plastic skirt to clear the GMC lever. Done. I have the take off Honda tracks here if you need them for any reason.

John,

Thanks. Today I did basically what you suggest, using Rob Allen's
instructions on how to disconnect the cables -- easy, but not obvious
at first to my old brain.

Tomorrow I'll visit the metal shop to pick up 4 pieces of 3/4" square
tubing 18" long. Those will adapt the seats to my 6-way electric
bases. 16 new bolts to install and I should be "sitting pretty".

By the way, I'm proud to announce that my GMC will have Made in USA
seats -- labels say TS Tech Alabama (in Boaz, AL). :-)

Kerry,

Tut, tut! You've lost out, for now. I got them both mounted
yesterday. Naturally, the second was MUCH easier than the first. The
steam cleaner is supposed to come today to do the carpets and the few
little smudges on the seats. I hope to figure out how to mount the
controls on them before he arrives.

You may yet get a chance at the seats: SHE hasn't seen them yet; I
suspect SHE'll claim they're too high and too firm and too narrow (I
don't dare tell HER that the problem is not not the width of the
SEAT). I'll insist that she at least take a couple of trips on them.
They are a bit higher than the old ones; the electric bases will
probably never raise again. :-)

Kerry,

They're yours "whenever". Perhaps at Pensacola?

Today I'm trying to mount the seat adjustment switches on the Honda
seats. That's going to pretty well settle your chances of getting
them. :-)

Now in case anyone else needs it:

PROBLEM: Removal of the side panel to modify it for the switches
requires removal of the recline lever -- which appears impossible.

SOLUTION: Here's exactly what I needed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQiMRVrdRqU
My seats don't have the cup holder, but there's a little plastic cap
in approximately the same location covering the 8mm screw mentioned in
the video -- easy!

My plan is to eventually repad and recover the OEM Jetsons seats as I like OEM correct on old vehicles. BUT, For now the leather Hondas are much better on the back and with the Unistrut adaptors height is perfect on factory swivels.

Ken - a word of advice. Having ridden on your old seats and having ridden in our 2014 CRV more than I'd like, my advice is to keep the old seats. I find the Honda seats hard and unforgiving. With my condition, chronic noassatall, I'd as soon sit on orange crates. Smile

Stick,

You're right that these Honda seats are harder than the ones they
replaced. I think I'll prefer them; I'm not as sure about HER, since
SHE hasn't yet seen nor sat on them. I had the carpets cleaned today,
right after I finished installing the electrical controls, so the
floor is still too wet for HER to visit.

After all the trouble installing them, we'll have to learn to live
with them -- the increased lumbar support will be worth a lot.

Have you got the Bluebird back to town yet? I need to take a look at
it -- can't properly razz you about it without having seen it. :-)

Ken,
We have had a number of different seats in our coaches over the years. The absolute worst seats were the factory seat that came in the 77 Eleganza II. The buttons on the seat and upper back were very uncomfortable. We replaced those with middle row seats out of full size GMC van. Put almost 47000 miles on them and they were very comfortable. The Buskirk stretch came with the High dollar FlexSteel leather heated seats, they were very nice, but did not fit us very well and were too much like sitting in a recliner like have at home. Installed a set of the Honda Odssey seat out of a 2010 Honda. Got them new from a retrofitter from Wisconsin. Both the wife and I love the seats, they are very supportive and also provide good back support. You need to make sure that the wifes feet can touch the floor so that she doesn’t have circulation issues because her legs are unsupported. Make sure that she can recline without hitting the overhead cabinets. We have almost 20K miles on ours since 2011 and are very happy. I had to cut my pedestal down a little bit so we were not too high. You’re taller than I am so I would be sure that your ride height is not too high and not looking out the top of the windshield. Just my personal experiences!

Thanks, JR,

I didn't have much choice on the height of the Honda seats -- too
high. :-) I replaced the original bases 10+ years ago with custom
heavy steel boxes and swivels. I was determined to not modify those
nor the electric bases, which themselves add 2" or so to the seat
height; the seats HAD to mount on top of those. To adapt the seats to
the bases, I used 3/4" rectangular tubing between them. That is the
only place I could have reduced the ride height; 1/8"x1" steel bars
would probably have been adequate, considering the proximity of the
holes; if things prove TOO high, I can easily lower them by that 5/8".

When I say "too high", that's a relative term. SHE's always had a
custom "footstool" to compensate for the seats being slightly too high
for her preference. SHE can also prop HER feet up on the carpeted new
days. I am quite comfortable with the new height, but don't expect to
often raise the seats. Only 6'5" Stick or similar are likely to need
to do that. :-)

The GM electric seat controls mounted nicely into the plastic
surrounds on the Honda seats; much nicer than the kludges I had on the
old seats. I even found some "pretty close" spray paint in my stock
to paint the bezels. I'll try to post photos today.

Ken,
I used 1” X 1/4” flat bar for the mounting adapter to my 6way power seat bases.
