I am not a seasoned motorhome owner, in fact I have never owned any camping equipment except a tent.
Wanted a GMC for a long time and the time came two weeks ago. We picked up a 1978 Transmode in NC.
I have been watching the Forum and finally decided to step in. We love our "ESCAPE POD".
Needs some mechanical work but all else seems good. I have a million questions and really need a mentor.
I am in Chesapeake Virginia. The Escape Pod needs a header gasket, which I have ordered. When I get that fixed I could drive it to anyone
close willing to help me determine needed work and explain the operation of the systems.

Bob,
Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....
Did you manuals with it?? If no, they can all be downloaded at http://www.bdub.net/GMCLinks.html and the price is real good. Look around while you are there.
While there, stop at the registry and send John Shotwell a note so we can keep track of your coach's history.
You have included most in this post, but for everybody benefit, please add to your sigfile your real name, a short coach description including major mods and a geographic reference. Yes, this is mostly there in this post, but that way it will be there in every post. I do love the tag line in you sigfile. You can leave that.
You have just joined a community like very few others. It is a collection of wonderful helping friends. It is much like that of the watermen that are my world. For that reason, I have taken to welcoming new owners much as any new owner or vessel would be welcomed there. So,
May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.
Welcome Bob
Matt

Header Gaskets came in Thursday (two days early).
Picked up new bolts after work yesterday.
Just finished the install.
No broken bolts and only one mashed thumb a bruised chest and only 37 bad words.
Fired it up and found muffler leak you could not hear with the header leak.
Going to patch that after lunch.
Going to Change oil, filter, brake fluid, Trans fluid, Anti freeze and put in new window washer fluid this week.
Open to any advise on type and procedure for each.
For the oil I am leaning towards Pennzoil T9.
There was a inline fuel filter on top of the engine spliced into the steel line from the pump.
I was installed with nonfuel rubber hose which was weeping fuel on top of the manifold.
That has been removed and good rubber fuel line installed.
I need the part number for the proper steel replacement line for the 403, I am not happy with even good rubber over the engine.
As pre advice of several, I have ordered Manuals, and a CD which is supposed to have it all.
Also, listed the coaches info on the registry.
I am going to go through everything mechanical first. The generator, internal power, frig, AC etc. are secondary.
They are no good if the coach can't get you some ware to use them.

Bob
Go here and scroll down for the fuel pump to carb line -- both an insulated version and steel. The insulated may be easier to install.
With the steel, I take out the four bolts holding the carb so I have more wiggle room -- after the line is finger tight I re install the bolts and snug up the fuel line. The carb bolts are low torque -- I use nine 9 ft lbs.

I WOULD SUGGEST YOU REPLACE IT - IF IT IS RUSTED THROUGH THE INNARDS MAY BE BAD AS WELL AND IF THEY ARE IT CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS
BECAUSE ALL THE EXHAUST IS FORCED THROUGH ONE MUFFLER. I JUST CHECKED AND A REPLACEMENT MUFFLER P/N 18425 ($37.80) CAN BE ORDERED

SMART MAN! YOU ARE 100% CORRECT IN REMOVING THE FUEL FILTER IN THE LINE GOING TO THE CARB! HERE'S A LINK TO A DOCUMENT I PUT
TOGETHER WITH THE HELP OF EVERYBODY ON THE GMCNET:
HERE'S THE PLACE TO PUT A FILTER:
FOR $44.85 YOU CAN GET A FLEXIBLE LINE LIKE THIS: HTTP://WWW.APPLIEDGMC.COM/PROD.ITML/ICOID/853
FOR $22.70 YOU CAN GET A SOLID LINE LIKE THIS: HTTP://WWW.APPLIEDGMC.COM/PROD.ITML/ICOID/918
I RECKON THE FLEXIBLE LINE IS WORTH THE EXTRA $20 BECAUSE:
1) IT IS INSULATED
2) YOU CAN REMOVE IT TO REPLACE THE CARB FILTER WITHOUT LOOSENING THE CARB
Brake fluid:
HERE'S A LINK TO WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE THE BEST DOT 4 AVAILABLE:
HERE IS THE DATA ON IT AND WHERE YOU CAN GET IT:
ATE 706202 ORIGINAL TYP 200 DOT 4 BRAKE FLUID - 1 LITER
DRY BOILING POINT: 536°F WET BOILING POINT: 392°F
HTTP://WWW.AMAZON.COM/GP/OFFER-LISTING/B003VXRPL0/REF=DP_OLP_NEW?IE=UTF8&CONDITION=NEW
I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST YOU BUY ONE OF THESE FROM JIM HUPY, IT WILL MAKE FLUSHING AND BLEEDING THE BRAKE SYSTEM A BREEZE!
Transmission fluid:
ANY GOOD QUALITY TRANSMISSION FLUID WILL DO, HOWEVER, KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN YOU CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID YOU DON'T DRAIN THE
FLUID OUT OF THE TORQUE CONVERTOR.
Transmission filter:
ALSO IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO CHANGE THE FILTER AS WELL. WHEN YOU CHANGE THE FILTER MAKE SURE THAT THE TUBE THAT GOES INTO THE
TRANSMISSION HAS THE O-RING ON IT AND IT IS A SNUG FIT. IF IT IS NOT THE PUMP CAN SUCK AIR.
Anti-freeze:
ANY GOOD QUALITY ANTI FREEZE IS FINE, MIX IT WITH DISTILLED WATER. DONT BUY PREMIXED AS YOU'RE PAYING A LOT FOR WATER!
As pre advice of several, I have ordered Manuals, and a CD which is supposed to have it all.
Also, listed the coaches info on the registry.
I am going to go through everything mechanical first. The generator, internal power, frig, AC etc. are secondary.
