In this picture, Wally mentions that the governor opening should be at least .020:

Is more gap better? Can there be too much gap?
I have two junkyard governors in good shape, one has a gap of about .026, and the other .032. Trying to figure out if one is "better".

That gap info came from our greatly missed Bob Drewes. Governors seem to work just fine with gaps greater than .020.

Karen,

Another thing to check. I had a governor that was dragging its weights on the bottom of the housing. I only heard it, but it also would not let the weights swing "home" so it was starting in 3rd gear.
