I just got a 78 GMC motorhome 23'. I have removed both fuel tanks for line replacement. I wanted to just reinstall the rear main tank and leave the front one out. I would cap the filler pipe outlet for the front tank. I also am going to installed as much hard line as I can to prevent a rubber line from causing a fire. I think 25 gal of fuel is plenty these days as gas stations are closer together then they were back then. This would also lighten the couch up some and prevent the fuel transfer caused by going up and down hills. What are your thoughts on this? I will use the Onan pickup tube that is already in the rear tank this way the Onan wont drain the tank. I will still have a 1/4 tank once the Onan's pickup starts sucking air.

I would only remove the tank to replace it with another form of energy
container that would assist me driving, for example some in-wheel
electro motor in the rear.
The more energy I can carry, the better I feel.

All depends on your own use. in my opinion, 25 gallons, you only a solid 150 miles a tank. even though it would make those fills look a little less costly, I would think you would be hunting down gas stations a little too often. My old Grand Wagoneer had a small tank, with a 200 mile range, and even though gas fill ups were quick and less money, watching the fuel gauge drop fast really was an eye opener.
I am actually worried about traveling to the west coast some day with the 50 gallons in my coach. I have crossed montana many times, and you want to get gas at the big gas stations in major towns because between the big towns, the gas costs quite a bit more, and can be a few miles off the exit, and some of the larger towns are 300 miles apart.
also on genset usage, you would have 20 gallons max, and at an hour per gallon, that is less then 24 hours of generator run time.
I am with sully, a third tank would be nice.

Manny Travao is now making and marketing a 50 gallon stainless steel fuel
tank. It fits where the two tanks reside. Only one fill inlet, one fuel
supply line, one sending unit. Never will rust out. If you want to know
more about it, contact Manny at mannystrannies.com.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Looks like I will be putting both tanks back in. I didn't think about fuel slosh. One more question I was wanting to do full metal line from the senders across the top of the tanks. Then have just a short section of hose connect to another steel line to the engine. I would swage the end of the steel line and slip it over the stub on the sender and then braze it up. Any comments on this?

What kind of problem might I have? I just hate rubber connections especially under the floor where I cant see them. The tank shouldn't flex that much at least not enough to break a line would it? Brake lines are always hard line straight to the master cylinder and the body flexes a lot more than a fuel tank. The only other option is the cut holes in the floor and use two short pieces of hose and then hard line. I just not sure if fumes would be coming up the floor.
I might seem a little paranoid on this but you see I had my house catch fire a couple years ago. Ever since I always think about fire prevention. I probably have more fire extinguishers in my house then a business. A little car extinguisher kept my house from burning to the ground.

Here's an example connecting to nylon line, but should be able to so the same to metal line.

I like the compression fittings might even inverted flare them and use a union. What kind of nylon line is that? The only nylon line I have seen is for diesel.

Thanks Mac. I have Manny on speed dial in my cell phone. Tried to recall
that URL from my head. Bad practice, that.
