Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and am looking forward to spending more time here after I purchase my GMC and roll it on home. To that end I am looking for suggestions on getting a pre purchase inspection done in or around Bingham Farms, MI.

The 1976 Eleganza that I'm intending to purchase is in awesome shape and has a fantastic history with the same enthusiast/owner since 1979. But I'm flying in from Bozeman, MT and driving it 1600 miles back home, so I'd like to address any issues before I begin the journey. Does anyone here know of someone who can do a house-call inspection, or is there a shop that comes recommended in that area?

Your help is much appreciated!

Welcome to the club.

I would imagine cinnabar would be happy to look it over. That's about 90 miles Away from Bingham farms. There are several other gmcers who have helped me out in the last year who are sprinkled around the state here who may be willing to help out or offer some more advice.

can't help you in Michigan, but if you take I-94 through MN and ND back home stop by. We can address any concerns if needed. (you probably will just end up taking I-90 through sd).

Make sure you have a plan on the tolls and the best route through chicago if you go south.

good luck and keep us updated

JP,

Welcome to the group; below you will find two links, the first has a lot of general information about GMC's the second is an
extremely detailed pre-purchase inspection.

http://gmcmotorhome.info/buygmc.html

http://gmcmotorhome.info/buyer.htm

The closest shop that could do an inspection for you is:

Cinnabar
116 Orval Street
Sandusky, MI 48471
Tel: +1 (800) 720-2227

The most important thing to check is the frame, they have rust problems around the front suspension mounting points and just in
front of and behind the "boxes" that house the rear suspension arms.

Cinnabar does a very thorough inspection and provides a lot of info and
feedback, but they will charge for the inspection.
And they are in the middle of nowhere.

My advice is to realize that the motor home has several "systems". Make a list BEFORE you get there.
Things to check for me would include;
Any log books;
Frame rust;
Tire wear and date of manufacture;
Miles on the engine and trans;
Leaks of all kinds;
Propane system;
Water system;
Electrical system;
Fuel system operation and condition of tanks and hoses;
Brakes and brake lines;
Finish this list with what is important to you.
Good Luck!

Other than Cinnabar, who I agree are experts when it comes to these... an alternative is the shop we take ours to which is A&D Repair, in Haslett, MI. They've worked on 3-4 GMCs in addition to ours on several occasions, so they've gotten to know these coaches well. They've worked on getting parts from JimK, Cinnabar, etc. Looks like it would be around 70 miles away from your pickup location, though.

Thanks everyone! Cinnabar was my first choice, but according to mapquest it's nearly 2 hours away, so it may be an option for a Post Purchase Inspection! Which may not be a bad idea. I would like to know what future improvements may be needed.

I'm buying this from a long-time Great Lakers' member. It has always been stored indoors and has never been driven in the snow, so I'm hoping that will minimize the rust issues. The engine has been rebuilt and it's sporting a fresh transmission, so those items should be solid. The tires have three seasons of use on them, but have been sitting for five - making them eight-years-old. The gambler in me wants to make the journey with these and replace them in the spring. I say gambler, but I'm also Scotch-Irish which is probably a more accurate descriptor!

My biggest concerns are frame rust, air suspension integrity, brakes and brake lines, and all the hidden problems that tend to arise during a 1600 mile trip. I guess I'll have to familiarize myself with the inspection link Rob supplied and embrace the unavoidable learning curve! I am very confident of the tremendous care this gem has received to date and am only concerned that it has been sitting for the past five years. It's received some very desirable upgrades, but the interior is essentially as it was when it rolled of the assembly line - a true time capsule!

Thanks again for all the wisdom! I really do appreciate it!

For your air bag system, if schrader valves and positive cut-offs have not been installed at the individual bags, install them. You then can air up the bags and isolate them from a failing system.
If you do not trust the air bags, you can get some threaded rod and nuts and build a replacement get you home insert. Check the forum for recommended size, it was discussed recently.
The forum is your friend.

No spare fluids, old hoses, and old belts are the big three show stoppers. Also I would grease all the fittings front and rear before the long trip. Welcome to the group.

My suggestion would be to take the coach to Cinnabar either pre or post purchase and at least get an assessment. Also I'd buy tires before you leave Michigan. You need tires, there's really no point in waiting. There are many things to go wrong on a 40 year old vehicle, regardless of how well maintained it is. I'd be concerned specifically about tires, brakes & brake hoses, radiator & cooling system, charging system, oil cooler lines, and air bags. All of the house stuff can wait til you get home.

Tires seem to age more with age sitting than they do when used regularly.

Eight years old is simply to damned old! BUY NEW TIRES NOW BEFORE YOU GO ANYWHERE!

Glass repair from a blowout is about $2,000

What did we ever do before the interwebs?! Thanks everyone! My first journey will be up to Cinnabar for a quick service/inspection and a new set of tires. I'm willing to risk the inconvenience of a flat, but I'm not particularly fond of repairing windows!

How are you at Sheet Molded Compound? One blowout can do 2500 - 3000
dollars worth of damage to the side of a GMC, easily. But what the heck, if
you weren't a gambler, you wouldn't have just bought a 40 year old motor
home. (grin). Welcome to the cult.

Be sure to schedule an appointment. I think they run several weeks out. Don't let them talk you into all steel tires ( they stiil like those) and their allignment specs are a bit outdated. I did home alignment with Jerry Works kit and got it right. Other than that they do things by the book.

Jim,

I saw the damage to the rear wheel well area on Bob Lee's GMC awhile back and it was a MESS!

I've come to the conclusion that it might be a good idea to explain what happens when a blowout occurs, most people have never
experienced on in a car let alone on a GMC so I am going to create a thread titled - GMC Tire Life / Blowouts.

If anyone has any photos of:

A) Front tire blowout
B) Rear tire blow out

Please send them to robmueller at iinet dot net dot au

So I can put them in a photo album which I HOPE will provide enough detail so that GMC owners can decide how long they run their
tires.

Regards,

How are you at Sheet Molded Compound? One blowout can do 2500 - 3000
dollars worth of damage to the side of a GMC, easily. But what the heck, if
you weren't a gambler, you wouldn't have just bought a 40 year old motor
home. (grin). Welcome to the cult.
Jim

JP in Bozeman, MT

Where are all of the Michigan experts that extol opinions but seem to be suddenly quiet when a person needs help?
