I have an external AM/FM antenna that I would like to eliminate from the
outside of the GMC. In a few weeks I hope to have the front inside cap down
from over the cockpit to replace the running lights, add insulation and
paint the cap. While there I thought that I might install a hidden antenna
to the front inside of the SMC cap. Centered, then run the cable to the
instrument cluster. I thought about using the antenna below:

Or

Does anyone know why this won't work? Have a better idea?

Thanks,

I haven't gone up to measure it, but I suspect the OEM GMC radio antenna on the roof is approx 32" long making it a 1/4 wave (FM band) on a nice large ground plane (aluminum roof). This is typical of most auto antennas and makes a very good antenna.

The product you are looking at physically shortens the radiating element to about 8" or so with no physical ground plane. I would suspect the range of your coach radio to fall to that of a typical alarm clock radio. Kinda like going from a nice outdoor TV antenna to a set of indoor rabbit ears on your TV.

There are too many "best thing since sliced bread" reviews on the site as well for my liking.

As long as you can see the tower of the station you are listing to, you will like it.

I have a broken off nub on the roof, and plugged in the cable that was in the dash when I put in a modern radio. Who knows what or if it connects anywhere. Radio works within and beyond cities to about 20-30 miles. I run the Bluetooth more, so it hasn't risen to "change or improve" place on the master list.

If you stick it to the fiberglass part of the roof it ought to do about as well as the GM windshield antennas. Stick it to the aluminum, ain't gonna do very well.

Yeah the modern radio that I have to install in my dash also has Blue tooth
as well as a wired USB connection/charger. AM/FM isn't a priority of mine,
and I won't be installing an external antenna, but I figured since I'll have
the cap down anyway I may as well install a hidden antenna to at least try
to get some reception.

Thanks Gene. I had surgery yesterday and it was a complete success! 6-8 weeks to recover and I should be back to work, and I will slowly begin tinkering with the GMC in that time too.
