What is the best option to change out old water heater on 1978 Royale?

Want to retain engine heat and also have electric element.

I have removed the propane from the coach.

This one is electric and I think it has an anti-freeze coil in it for engine heat:

Probably looking at one of these guys if you have an existing Atwood in your Royale.

Just dont hook up the propane part of it.

They sell replacement water tanks too if thats an option.

I do like the heat exchange feature on ours to pull in somewhere with hot water ready to go.

Here is the stainless tank I got from applied right before I put it in.

Do a better job at doping your pipes then me or else they will drip. Also when you are replacing the heater line make sure that things are really tight, I decided to splice a little new line into my system. I lost my coolant and overheated, luckily it was just idling in my driveway as I fiddled with the AC no damage done. The engine preheater makes the water in the tank HOT after a good drive. Take your showers shortly after parking and you may never need to turn on the electric element. I haven't yet.

The hotwater tanks were one of those "differences" between GMCs finished off by GMC, and other Upfit coaches which started life as Transmodes.

I believe the Royales all had Atwood 6 gallon water heaters. So they are different than the ones meant for replacements in true to form GMCs. Im sure one meant for a GMC could work or be made to fit in a Royale. But Im not sure if its worth the effort/hassle.

GM tried very hard to avoid any unsightly doors or access panels on the outside of the GM furnished coach.

The one from West Marine, looks like it would fit the bill.

Maybe even the 11 gallon model.

Thanks

Randy,

We still use the original 6g. Atwood in our X-Birchaven. Your Royale
probably had the same heater. While the LPG is still installed, we seldom
use it. The engine heat coil provides more than enough hot water on travel
days. When shore power is available, I turn on the 120vac element I
installed in the drain plug hole 17 years ago. That provides all the hot
water SHE and I need. Only when dry camping do I ever light the LPG.

The drain plug replacement elements are readily available -- notably in the
back pages of the FMCA magazine.

Loffen, That Atwood is the OEM water heater as delivered from from Avion. The West Marine version is mo betta because:

1) the case is stainless steel
2) the drain is located lower in the tank and will drain more water out for winterization (downside is you have to make 100% sure you have refilled the tank before you turn it on in the spring or you WILL burn out the electrical element.
3) there is a hole at the top of the center front rectangular panel that you can reach in and reset the overheat trip switch. On the Atwood you have to take the cover off.
4) the West Marine model is cheaper (but not much).
5) the ports on the West Marine model are a bit further apart which will make plumbing it up a bit easier.
