After cruising the heart of Europe on a river boat with the gmc group, Judy
and I arrived at 7:00 A.M. Eastern Time in the big apple. Sitting on a
tour bus in times square. Thus place is NUTS. The Pope is coming tomorrow.
Only a couple of jillion cops present. Streets are blocked off. A madhouse.
Wish I was at the GMCMI with you all.

Jim,
New York is always a mess when it comes to traffic it's a matter of degrees!
Those GMC's and Escalades are protecting people from the sinister stuff ;-)

Rob, you and I differ a bit about who needs protection from whom. My blind
trust in politicians has been a bit on the "show me, then I'll believe it"
side since the Kennedy era. You really need to have boots on the ground
here to comprehend this spectacle. The cost for protecting the Pope here
would feed a good sized country like Romania for quite a while. Management
of resources is not on any ones list here. Dwayne is right about a sea of
yellow, though.

Jim,
Like yourself I am of the opinion that now a days there are very few statesmen and LOTS of politicians that don't serve the people,
they serve themselves!
You forgot I grew up in Hoboken, which is right across the Hudson from NYC. I am used to living in inner cities. I commuted to
school (7th & 8th grade) via the Number 63 Bus from Washington Street in Hoboken to the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) on 42nd
street. From there I took the 8th avenue IND subway line from the PABT to the Columbus Circle exit at 59th street. I saw lots of
events like the one you're experiencing. I will admit it is the biggest security operation ever; however, that's what is required.
In my opinion management of resources and cost is irrelevant when one considers this possible headline:
POPE SHOT AND KILLED IN NYC!
Regards,
Rob M.

And there are certainly any number of evil-doers who would be only too glad to trade their lives for the infamy of being the one who brought that headline to pass!
Judy and I spent 14 of the first 16 days after the Oklahoma City Murrah Federal Building bombing providing comm to Salvation Army on the scene!
It's definitely a different world from the one in which we grew up!

Yes. We were sitting in times square yesterday about noon right under the
huge video screens and the big ball that decends on new years eve. Having a
steaming hot cup of Starbucks coffee. People of the world passing by with
cameras. A hundred different languages spoken within earshot. Micky and
Minnie, the Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman, the Pope, Oscar the Grouch, Big
Bird, Hot Dog and pretzel vendor carts, News trucks with reporters,
Hovering Helicopters, cabs, tour busses, sky scrapers, ABSOLUTELY GOT TO
SEE IT. WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED IT FOR ANYTHING. But, it will be good to be
home, too. Alive in New York.

Today. September 26th, 2015. Pope flew out to Philadelphia this morning
early. New York exhaled. Except for Bill Clinton, who claims that he never
inhaled. Hopped the subway to the world trade center. Walked a short bit to
ground zero. Photo op for sure. Stood in long lines to buy a ticket, then,
other lines to enter the memorial museum. WORTH EVERY BIT OF THE WAIT !
Yes, I was shouting. Every one should see what can happen when you fail to
remain vigilant. Also, a wonderful reminder of what made, and continues to
make, America the greatest country on this planet. I am humbled. See it if
you can.

Having spent summers in New Yark, I sort of side with Kerry... but... The primo museum in the country is to me the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago,
For classical music, the Met used to come to Atlanta, save the trip to Manhattan. I had the privilege of hearing E Powerr Biggs play the Wurlitzer in the castle on the Hudson. American history? Boston - Faunial(sp?) Hall or the Old North Church. Motorhead nostalgia? The corner of Grand and Spaulding, Chicago.
Scenery and a nice walking path? about 30 miles from my house, the Appalachian Trail starts and runs North and East for a couple thousand miles.
But... to each his own

Jim,
I have visited Ground Zero twice, once with Helen back in 2008 and alone last year. It wasn't finished the first visit but was the
second. The lines weren't too long either time. Both times when I reached the memorial I was DEEPLY moved. I thought it was a
wonderful tribute to the 2,997 casualties of the 9/11 attack:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_September_11_attacks
Last year there was a guy giving a guided tour of the memorial and I listened in and heard a great story. He pointed out a tree that
was next to the memorial and explained that it was at the site on 9/11 and was covered with rubble but alive. When the construction
workers found it they dug it up and it was moved to a nursery in upstate NY. There it was nursed back to health and when it was
determined that it was strong enough to be transplanted it was returned to the memorial. I felt that was a clear demonstration of
the spirit of the memorial.

Johnny,
This is a GREAT thread; sharing sites we've seen and enjoyed around the USA will help people when they plan tours.
When Helen and I were in Chicago we missed the MS& I; I just visited their website and it looks like a return visit is in order!

Rob, that is quite similar to our experience here in Oklahoma City. A decades old American Elm tree was almost directly across the street from where the bomb blast that destroyed the Murrah Federal Building and 168 lives. With lots of tender and loving care, that tree has survived in place and every year, seeds from that tree are distributed to almost every state in the US for starting new life. The tree is literally labeled "The Survivor Tree" and is the copyrighted symbol of events memorializing the events including the Oklahoma Memorial Marathon, held the fourth Sunday in April.
