So, Jim Bounds group is just about finished with the restoration of my 23 ft Birchaven. Some of you may recognize or remember it as “Chauncy” on Jims COOP website.
I will be flying back next week to help with the final detailing, and of course I will be doing a few close in test trips around the Orlando area before I head off to the West Coast. Once I leave Orlando, I am planning on taking a leisurely 6 to 8 weeks for my return trip, bringing the coach back to California. I hope to keep you all posted on my trip and adventures. This will be my first major cross country trip and am a bit apprehensive, but that’s another story. I do have my “Black List” handy. smile emoticon
Right now I am looking for suggestions for campgrounds / destinations that you all have liked in your journeys. Since it is getting close to winter, I’ll be taking a southern route, but am also deviating from the south to hit some locations mid america if the weather permits. Though I have many destinations already in mind, I am also looking to what others have found that would be fun to add to my list.
I’d like to spend about half of my time “off the grid” so am also looking for federal lands, parks etc. where I can use my “senior” America the beautiful pass. Also, I am a semi professional photographer, so Kodak photo opportunity points and locations (I’m sure many of you remember those signs) would be greatly appreciated.
Please don’t be reticent to through out ideas for me, as this is going to be my first amazing adventure in my new coach.
Regards to all

When we brought back our Palm Beach from Ohio we took the southern route and luckily hit Albuquerque balloon fiesta in full swing. Had I known this we would have reserved a space somewhere close in, but as it was the time we had there was fun although the winds were too high for flying. I see that this year it’s being held October 3 - 11.

That might be a fun stop!

We also stopped in Oklahoma City to visit the Murrah building. A moving monument. And we had to stop by the Gateway Arch in St. Luis. What a sight to see.

David,

If you're going to take I-10 across Texas, NM, and AZ, there are several places I could recommend:

San Antonio has the River Walk and the missions (including the Alamo). A nice place to stay there is: http://www.travelersworldrvresort.com/

fredericksburg, TX has the Nimitz War of the Pacific Museum and several nice RV parks.

El Paso, TX has a nice State Park a little to the Northeast of town: http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hueco-tanks

In New Mexico there is City of Rocks NW of Deming (dry camping): http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/SPD/cityofrocksstatepark.html

Also, Silver City, NM is a nice place to visit with several nice RV parks. Our favorite is south of town nand back about 7 miles of mountain (well maintained ) dirt road: http://burromountain.wix.com/burrohomestead

Further along in AZ is Chiricahua National Monument, SE of Willcox: http://www.nps.gov/chir/index.htm (Dry camping)

A few miles west is Triangle T Ranch in Dragoon: http://azretreatcenter.com/ (Dry camping or full hookups

Tombstone also has several nice RV parks but is a bit of a tourist trap. (Nothing wrong with that, really)

Sierra Vista has Steve Ferguson and many other nice sites.

Tucson Has LOTS of attractions that I could fill you in on if you are interested along with a couple of State and County parks. You may want to look into a membership to Passport America. Member parks offer 1/2 price camping and a trip like you are talking about can save you the membership fee several times over.

If you are into a beach stop, Buccaneer State Park in Louisiana is a great place. All new sites and bath houses. Total rebuild after Hurricanes destroyed the old park.
Coming I-10, heading West, in Fl, exit 142 has the cheapest gas in the entire State.

Next cheap gas is Mississippi, I paid $1.76 this past week. Go see New Orleans, there is an expensive campground downtown that gets you very close to the French Quarter. Pricey, but I hear that it is worth the money for location, location, location.

City of Lafayette operates a city RV park that is just off I-10 and very reasonable ($15?).

Buccaneer State Park is in Waveland, Mississippi.
Boomtown Casino in Biloxi has recently opened their campground. Hollywood a Casino in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi has a campground. These costs more than Buccaneer.

David,

Here's a couple of suggestions:

New Orleans: French Quarter: Stay at the French Quarter RV Resort, not cheap but walking distance to Bourbon St.

http://www.fqrv.com/

Houston: Johnson Space Center (JSC): Stay at the Marina Bay RV resort, also not cheap but walking distance (1.2 miles) to the Kemah
Boardwalk. You would have to drive to JSC.

When Kathy and I made our trip around the US we stopped at the welcome
centers at the entrance to almost every state. They have maps , they known
whats going on locally , and can recommend campgrounds and places to eat.
Have a great trip!
