SOS!
Lady luck has ran out and I need to get my GMC towed from Abiline to Fort Worth. 150 miles.
Local tow company quotes $2,500. Says they need to get a permit.
Any one got a better option or suggestions?

Go find a local landscape guy with a low boy trailer that they use to haul there backhoe around and offer him 500$ to haul it home

Or call your favorite tow company in Fort Worth and have them come get you. Same distance.

Sir, I would try a different tow co. Never heard of having to permit a Gmc. Local tow co's around here is bout $3 mile one way. Sounds like you are getting the "good ol boy" price. You don't have toe insurance?

For sure! run away from anybody that states they need a permit!
If I was retired, I would tell you to fly me down there from MN, and we could use my AAA. That would be cheaper then what you were quoted!
if your rear wheels have not fallen off, and I think from your other post, that is not the case, this is all you would need:

no permit required!

I can't find it now, but there was a guy in Dallas that rented a 3 axle, bumper pull 2 car open trailer for like a couple hundred a day... Was a 34' I think... If you have or know of someone with a pickup that can pull that sort of load, that would not be a bad option.... Pretty flat between here and Abilene, too. I don't think it had a winch, though... Is your rig driveable at all? I'll keep looking to see if I can find it...

This isn't the place I mentioned above, but there are trailers for rent from this company that could pull a GMC for between $100 and $150 a day, but most appear to be goosenecks:
http://www.cstrailers.com/rental-trailers/
This one is bumper pull, but weight-wise and overhang would be really pushing it... 20' and 11,400 capacity...

Dump your tanks and take highway 180 back driving easy and maybe you could pull it off....

In general, I believe that "bumper tow" hitches are limited to 500 pound tongue weight and 5,000 pounds trailer weight !
Class V hitches that use a draw bar can go higher than that but I doubt that they would rate highly enough for a trailer with a GMC coach as the load ! They would probably require a 2-ton or higher rated truck and a gooseneck trailer.

Modern pickup trucks and SUVs have a surprisingly high towing capacity these days. Most modern 3/4 ton pickups are rated to bumper tow 12K+... Yes those max numbers are with a weight distributing hitch, but a GMC motorhome will not need a 2 ton truck or anything even close to be safely towed. Heck, our 15 year old Ford Excursion is rated to bumper tow 11K with a tongue weight of 1250... No goosenecks on an Excursion.
Here is Ford's current tow weight comparison sheet (as it was the most comprehensive of the big 3). A 1 ton dually will bumper tow 19000 pounds... And is rated to to over 26K pounds on a gooseneck. Dodge and GM are (not surprisingly) similar.
