Good afternoon,

I'm the proud new owner of a 1976 Glenbrook, built in July of 1975. A new hot water heater was installed years ago, but minus the metal containment box shown in the maintenance manual. Also, the 110V conduit terminates in midair with only two wires running from it to the heater - the GM wiring diagram shows three wires in the stock configuration: WHT, GRN (GRD), and BLK. I don't see a ground wire anywhere. Am I missing something about this installation, or am I in for a shocking shower? Thanks for your insights! PaulTucson, AZ1976 Glenbrook

Sounds like a P.O. took a short cut on his wiring. I feel that you need the green or ground wire, tied into the 110 circuit. Easy enough to run a length of green wire to the existing 110 circuit. I suggest that you do use green, so that later you will not drive yourself nuts trying to figure out what that wire does or where it goes. I had a similar problem with the missing green wire on the generator run into the coach.
Water and electricity do not play together well.
Check on Bdub's site for the GMC wiring diagram. It's small, but could help.

Tom,

Bad choice of words. Ground from the water heater should not tie into the 110 (120v) circuit in the motor home. It should be connected to the existing ground circuit in the power panel. The ground in the power panel should only be connected to the 120v neutral at the power source.

Paul,

Welcome to posting on the site (I know you've been 'lurking' for some time)

I just went out and looked at my water heater. I have never paid any attention to it before besides changing the engine heat hoses, but I didn't see a pan under mine either. It has a galvanized sheet metal enclosure around it. Also, mine DOES have a ground wire attached to it. The hot, neutral, and ground are all sticking out of the side and have wire nuts on them. I'm guessing they should be in a box or enclosure, but they are not in an area that needs servicing very often, and seem to be safe, so I'll address that at my leisure.

Tom, Hal and Karl,

Thanks for the advice and your observations. I'll install/restore a ground wire from the water heater to the power panel ground circuit...before my next GMC shower Smile

Thanks!

Paul

Paul,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.

I was going to get back to you yesterday, but we hit a place in Nebraska with poor coverage and I forgot about it last night at Walmart. I try to ONP at Cabela's because they have marked off areas and a dump, all but Kearny.

It is relatively obvious that what happened is the PO did not understand that the conduit was the safety ground. That is how mine is even though it the drawing indicates a wire ground. In your case, there should be a green or bare wire in the conduit box. You can add the ground wire there easily. There used to be a box on the heater that would have carried the safety ground. The box and conduit had to be there because of the temperature.

I see that you have already found th value of being a member of this community. It won't get better only because there is no room. When you became a GMC owner and came here, you suddenly ended up with a cadre of old friends eager to assist you at keeping the old girl road worthy. You will also soon find that the coach is more than just another toy. It will become a part of your life. This and the community all remind me of my world of watermen. For that reason, I like to welcome new owners here much as a new owner or vessel is welcomed to that community. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Paul

Matt - Now in Mountain time and headed towards Denver
