I see that JimK is offering new Onan generators (for some time now). I checked the measurements and as expected will fit in the current compartment if the house battery is moved up front. Has anyone installed one of these in their coach? What is all involved? I would imagine fabricating some kind of platform for it to sit on? It is very tempting to get one of these and finally be done jacking around with the ole Troll!

If they're like the ones I used, alls you have to do is open a couple of holes in the floor of the com[partment. The 2800 and I believe the 4K are single cylinder two pole sets, 3600 RPM. The 5500 >looks< like the V-twin belt drive set I bought a couple of. 2400rpm, quiet and smooth. The klittle sets - particularly the 2800s - initially had some teething problems, but Onan sorted them out and get the reliability up to par. I've still got one in the garage, came out of an Econoline we sold. Hangs under the van, in a GMC it ought to fit the bay without much trouble.

If you can get by with 2800 watts, it fits snugly in the original Onan bracket.
They are a bit pricey though.

Very nice installation JP, thanks for sharing.

I agree, a bit pricey but the 2800 is more palatable. I assume the 2800 is enough to run a single room AC?

Jon,

Thanks. It's rated for a 13.5K btu AC plus 600W base load. All the specs are here:

Got mine from JimK as his price was very competitive.

Yes agree, Jim has good prices for the Onan and if/when I get one will be from him.

I have a 20-year-old Onan Microlite 2800 with nearly 1000 hours on it sitting in my garage. We bought it new and ran it in our old Toyota motorhome. Nice little generator. I've thought about rigging up some sort of cart for it, but with generators from places like Harbor Freight being so cheap these days...

JimK does have great prices on Onans, especially the 2800.

That's the one I have here, no idea how many hours, it was used on a van in radio promotion service for six or seven years. Mounts between two plates under a van, or you can sit it on a shelf with a couple of large holes cut for cooling air through the shelf.
