Our current plan is to attend the Western States and then run north to the GMCMI.
That would put us about on time for the Custer State Park Buffalo Round-up.

Problem 1: It makes no sense to go past Custer State Park and then come back south to the round-up.
Problem 2: As nearly as I can tell, there is no available camping space in CSP on those days.

Does anybody have a plan that makes any sense??

That is true, but the roundup starts at 0630 and that means disconnecting and readying the coach for the road starting at about 0500. I would like to come up with a more convenient answer.

Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park
Parking lots open at 6:15 am and closes at 9:00 am. Actual Roundup begins at 9:30 am. Guests must stay in the viewing areas until the herd is safely in the corrals, generally around noon. Free shuttle service is provided from the viewing areas into the corrals and back to the parking lots. Some people may choose to walk. Pancakes, sausages and beverages are available at 6:15 am, in both viewing areas. Bring folding chairs, cameras, binoculars, layered clothing, rain gear and sun screen. Park temporary license: $15 per vehicle.

Matt, There is an RV park in Hermosa SD by the name of Heartland RV Park. It is located about 5 miles from the Custer State Park entrance.
You might try to get reservations there. You could also try to find RV parks in Hot Springs, SD which is about 35 miles South of Custer State Park.

To anyone that is planning to attend the Buffalo Round-up, I would suggest getting an early start. The last three miles gets very congested and can take from 1 to 1.5 hours to get to the corrals. The round-up is definitely an impressive event to witness and worth the effort.

Bob, Do you recommend the north or the south viewing area for the roundup?

Rick, I have never been to the south viewing point but I am told that there are better vantage points from the North side. There are usually less people on the south side. I believe that is because the access is thru Hot Springs, SD and that is out of the way for most people. When I go back to work on Tuesday I will try to get some first hand advice from people that have done both and I'll post any info I get here.

Rick, As promised I checked with some people more familiar with the Buffalo Round-up than I am. I learned that the both the South and North views are equal. The advantage of the North view is that it is a shorter (distance) drive and the advantage of the South view is that even though the drive is longer, the time spent waiting in traffic is much less. If you are coming in from the South I would definitely chose the South entrance. If you leave from Rapid City I would probably go with the North entrance. Hope this helps.

Thanks Bob,

There is nothing like a native guide...
I have set a reservation a Heartland. I suspect that we will end up at the north area. With the early start, I didn't want to be too far away.
