Bought a complete liquid FIRE FIGHT systems for engine, refrigerator, and generator compartment all with automatic heat sensor that will turn on each system when there is excess heat in the chamber. Also two each hand held liquid extinguishers for both front and rear areas and a large hand held unit on door exit. Also bought hammer to break the rear window for exit. Installed all myself in less than a day. They are non corrosive so no replacements due to powered extinguishers caused corrosion.

After all the work we have put into our coach, less than $1,000 is cheap insurance. We have seen a lot of burned to the ground RVs on the side of road in our 240,000 miles in smallrvtouring.com .

Apparently the large amount of potential explosive bottled gas means that a fire department must keep everyone away while the unit burns out, mostly to the ground.

In studying the pictures of Bob's coach, I note that it appears to be still plugged in to the electrical service pedestal.

I don't know the layout of a Royale coach, but it might be that the refrigerator is on the street (left) side of the coach. I do not see the fridge input vent on the curb side as in my Palm Beach.

Since the reports so far indicate that the coach was unoccupied (ergo, motor not running) and the genset compartment seems untouched, my suspicion is that either an absorption type fridge lit itself up or there was some sort of short circuit in the power distribution wiring.

A terrible loss, for sure. At Branson, we saw all the work that Bob had done to make the coach suitable for Linda and her wheelchair.

It's great that no loss of life occurred and Bob's Yenko Corvair is still intact. My first ever new car was a 1962 Corvair Monza coupe with the highest HP output other than the turbo version.

Is that a campsite?
It looks like a street to me, not sure what youre seeing but I think the guardrail is unpowered Smile
I'd sure be interested in the root cause of that catastrophe

I think what you are seeing is the combination of an awning arm lying on the ground and a fire hose. Also the generator is on is on the other side, as is the power connection in a Royale.

Mebbe so, David. The presentation of the photo on my computer monitor did not make obvious that the guard rail was just that. When I later did the "enlarge" option, it was/is. I was referring to the view from the left side of Bob's coach.

However, the vents on the two rear compartments (propane and generator) are exactly the same as those on my '76 Palm Beach coach with the generator on left rear side of coach and propane tank on right rear side.

Were Royales originally built as Trans Modes and then fitted out by a non-GMC finisher? It seems strange that somebody would swap sides for the genset and propane.

Mac,

Royales and Birchavens were sold by GMC to Coachmen as Transmodes. The
Onan's were installed in exactly the same place as on GMC-fitted coaches,
apparently by Coachmen since they didn't connect the fuel lines to the top
of the main tank. Those coaches, at least most of them, have larger
propane tanks than GMC-fitted coaches which are mounted cross-ways beneath
one of the dinette seats. That's why you'll see the floor raised beneath
their dinette tables -- no one's feet would reach the floor because of the
seat being on top of the propane tank.

Thanks, Ken. I could not imagine that Coachmen (or any other finisher) would have made such a wild design change.

I now believe that David Orders and I were probably referring to different views of Bob's coach.
