Not wanting to start a big discussion on alternator pulley size, just would like to know the size of the stock and possibly the so called "larger" just so I know what I have.
Thanks

Appie,

Measuring the diameter of the pulley at the rim isn't going to tell you if they are the same. Take the same belt and wrap it around
all three pulleys and pinch it together so that you can measure the OD of the belt in the middle of the pulley on all three.

You also need to make a template of the groove in all three and see if the angles are the same.

Now you are telling me

Installed the new alternator with minor troubles. There is a 4th connection that intrerfeeres with the mounting. The good thing is it works, but as I read before from other peoples experience, it whines. I hope that goes away as it gets used
I guess the pulley is larger thus turning slower. I reckon that is ok as it is a 100 a output could be the same
Now when my repair set arrives I will try to repair the old one.
Btw. Be happy you guys living in the us. 1 alternator in Spain minus 30% discount. 300 euro!
But delivered in 3 days. That is not bad. People wait longer time for european parts

Maybe you are hearing the whine as this one is working. Prehaps the banks are down a bit and there will be less draw after a couple hours driving. My 80A whines with engine in the 1500-2500 RPM range when I have the refer in DC mode as that draws a lot. Above that speed the "chop" becomes too fast or too smooth too really hear.

I have noticed that the pick up trucks with lower gear ratio generally have
larger diameter pulley as the engine is turning faster than a passenger
car.
When one has air conditioning, they seem to put smaller pulley so that the
alternator will spin more in hopes of charging and producing more.

Appie,

Click on the link below and you'll learn everything you'll ever want to know about pulleys.

http://www.gizmology.net/pulleysbelts.htm

Just wondering how the $300 Euro broke down:

1) Part Cost
2) Shipping
3) Duties and Taxes

Here in Australia we don't have to pay duty on items shipped that are less than $1000.00. However, if they are sent via UPS, FedEx,
DHL we get nailed $50 to process them through Australian Customs, if they are sent via US Post it's free.
