My father bought a 26' 1976 GMC about 7 years ago (this is a guess) from
the wife of his long time friend Bill Shumway, some of you California folk
may remember him. About two years ago both my father and I developed health
issues and the rig has been sitting. I am completely recovered but I know
NOTHING about cars. I do know that I love the GMC and would like to get it
running and hold on to it. My health issues are completely resolved but my
father has rapidly progressing dementia, so I am on my own. I travel
frequently to horse, dog and cat shows, not long distances, and I would
love to be able to use the RV for at least some of these trips.

Right now, I just want to get it started! I need someone who is willing to
answer basic questions and point me in the right direction. I know this rig
is unique in a lot of ways and there are things that only GMC owners will
be able to answer. I will, of course, need to find someone to work on it,
so if you know of anyone in Washington state that would be reliable that
would be a great help. I have a 23 yo nephew who likes to work on cars but
when he looks at the GMC he is definitely at a loss and I think it would
probably be a pretty steep learning curve for someone so young lol. I
realize this will not be cheap and if there are significant problems, I
might not be able to pull it off, but I would at least like to find out
what it needs and go from there. Does anybody out there have any helpful
advice for me?

Thanks for reading!

Susan,

That was a coach that got a lot of use and was well taken care of. The
Shumways were active members of GMC Western States and weren't afraid to
drive to the rallies, no matter the distance. My husband and I traveled
with them several times. So, at least you have a coach that wasn't just a
driveway queen. That is a good thing. As far getting it running, is the
battery good and if so, does the engine start up? How old is the gas? If it
has been sitting for a while, you should use fresh gas when you start it.
As far as your nephew being a bit young to work on it, if he is a
motorhead, he shouldn't have problems learning fast. Get or download a
manual for it, if one didn't come with the coach and let him read through
it. GMCs are basically a simple drivetrain compared to electronic marvels
of today. Things get more complex as owners tweek their rigs, but the basic
mechanical skills should put your nephew in good stead for working on it
-especially if he can read and follow the manual. And, there is always
someone here to point him and you in the right direction.
Check the GMC Cascaders website and see if they are having a rally anywhere
near you. They will be a good resource for you as you undertake the
adventure of GMC ownership.

Susan,

You are lucky to be in California. Well, of course you are, but so far as the GMC is concerned we have good many coaches around and friendly people to assist with advise and more. If you are anywhere near the Bay Area - Jim Kanomata’s Applied GMC in Newark will be your best resource.

If the best tool in your toolbox is a checkbook then you can have a safe and reliable coach.

Even still - attending a rally will overwhelm you with information and ideas for how to make the coach your own.

The best of luck to you, and hopefully your Dad will perk up from time to time when discussing the coach.

Susan,

First, the 23yo nephew is not too young. (Says the guy that has been taking care of other peoples engines since age 12.) If you get him the manuals, and he has a decent set of tools, there is almost nothing that a GMC requires that he cannot accomplish. Then, if he has doubts, get him signed in here. He can get more good, clear and correct answers here than is possible any other way. There is also the GMC Assist list, he can probably find a local to help him when he needs it.

About tools, if he is willing to what is required and is lacking a correct tool, you can buy it for him and still be way ahead. Speaking of such, if he doesn't like the paper manuals, get him a dedicated (old, used) laptop and load all the manuals on that.

The required maintenance may never be much, but it will be on-going. Oil changes, front end lube, bogie lube and such. Grease is always cheaper than parts.

There are also three or more facebook groups about GMC. But tell him that any advice he sees there should be checked here before acting. It is a great social group.

Matt - Learning about the care and feeding of GMC right here for a while now.

About all I can offer from Georgia is moral support. Consider though, As I type this it is evening, I'm parked in an RV slot at the Cherokere Rose Cluster of dog shows (MB-F superintends, look on their web site about our cluster), enjoying two fingers of really goo Bourbon. Only way to go to shows. Contrast: find a motel, convince them to allow dog(s) try to find grooming space, go set up, back to the hotel, up early in the morning, find a restaurant where you can watch your car or van while you eat, go to the site, set the dog up, show, go back to the motel, find a restaurant, etc. Tomorrow, repeat. With: Get up, fix breakfast and or coffee, Groom the dog (I have a popup canopy, small dogs groom in the coach), walk 100 feet into ringside, walk 100 feet back to the coach, have lunch, decide whether to watch the rest of the show or not, enjoy 'sevenses'. Average daily rate - $35 for space, usually no water or sewer, but usually water on site, and a dump station or a honey wagon. Enjoy knowing the guy with the diesel pusher next to you lost more in depreciation last year then you have invested in your GMC.
Fix it and use it - you won't regret it.

Susan,
Don't know why everyone is asking where you are located. You clearly stated you are north of Seattle. Or did I dream that?

Your closest, most experienced GMCer is Jim Hupy in Salem, Ore. He repairs GMC's at his shop at home; only GMC repair facility in the Great North Wet. Very knowledgeable and sharing; he can help you get it safely on the road. He monitors the net and will respond if you post any questions for him.

Gene,

Just exactly how do you put "north of Seattle" into Google maps to see how far she is from Jim. ;-)

Now that she has advised that she's close to Bothell, WA I was able to determine she's approximately 233 miles from Jim in Salem,
OR.

Having said that Jim Hupy is on a Viking Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam between August 21 to 28 and may not be monitoring the
GMCnet.

In an off net email I suggested she put together a sigfile like:

There's some decent info at bdubz site here:

http://gmcmotorhome.info/buygmc.html#waking

The first few paragraphs have some decent info to get started, the later bullet points are if more advanced resuscitation techniques are needed. I'm not sure how much you and your son have poked and prodded at the beast yet, but some very basic starters to get you going: Dipstick is in the front panel under the driver's side window, engine will have a cover between the seats (yes it took me longer than I'm proud of to find out how to get to the engine).

Two years is a decent length of time, but might not be enough for things to go too terribly awry. Plug it in for a while and see if the batteries take a charge.

The scope of the project might seem huge, but start with the little stuff. Try to charge the battery, then see if she cranks over. Keep posting progress and questions here, these guys are wonderful!

I'm lurking here in Basel, Switzerland. Limited electrons and very high
