I was trying to awake my Onan from its slumber this past weekend using the
guide from Gene Fisher's site.
When I got to the step for testing the fuel pump, the pump ran, but I got
no fuel.
I discovered that the fuel line from the tank to the generator is
completely missing.
I was thinking I was going to have to drain my tanks and drop them to fix
this, but a few minutes ago I crawled under there and found this plugged,
cut-off hose coming out of the rear tank on the driver's side:

(photo is looking to the rear)
I was under the impression that the generator fuel supply came off the top
of the tank, but that hose makes me think I might be wrong.
Does the Onan get its fuel from the side of the tank on a 1973 26' Painted
Desert?
If not, then does anyone have any theories as to the purpose of that
cut-off hose in my picture?

That mystery outlet appears on many 1973 fuel tanks.
Here is a photo (not mine) of the fuel tank hose routing -- the Onan is to the bottom right of the rear tank.

Dangit, I knew that was too good to be true.
Thanks for the photo though, that's very helpful!

I will add that some say Coachmen fed the Onan from a tee in the main fuel line.
The purpose of the dedicated fuel port was to prevent the Onan from running the tanks dry and stranding the coach.

It's not just that some say that. It is that way on all Coachman outfitted Royales and Birchavens.
When they got the Transmodes from GMC there was no Onan installed. They didn't want to incur the labor of dropping the fuel tank to connect the fill hose to the top of the rear tank so the spliced the Onan line to the fuel line going from the rear tank to the GMC engine.
The fitting is still on the top of the tank so if Royale or Birchaven owners want to convert to the GM factory hookup they can do so by lowering the tank.
I have an '74 Eleganza. I converted my Onan to Propane only and capped off the old hose. This was several years ago but I idly thought, "I could get my monkey hand up there and put on a new hose." Matt Colie referenced that he had heard this had been done. If you have big arms and hands, perhaps a younger kid or spouse person could get in there.

My Norris upfit is done the same way - tee in the main line. I don't dry camp to amount to anythiing so I've not bothered to relocate it.

I've located the correct fitting on my rear tank, and I found that there is a bit of hose attached to it and plugged just like the mystery fitting.
It looks like there is sufficient hose there for me to connect a fuel line without dropping the tank, so with any luck I'll have my Onan up and running soon

Id check the condition of that line before hooking it back up. It may be old and mushy and gummed up. It was removed for some reason. Running a new Ethanol friendly line may save some mess down the road. Last thing you want to do is suck a bunch of gum into the Onan fuel pump....
You can also bottle feed the onan with an aux gas can just to see if it will pump and work.
Good luck. Having a running onan again is a victory.
