We have been working on getting the inside fixed up to our liking. and keeping up with maintenance. for the last two weeks I have gotten really close the the outside of the coach. there is a lot more length to these things when you hand rub the sides 3 times while applying paint with a brush and roller.
I am using a polyurethane paint (boat paint) with the roller and tip method. it comes out with a really smooth surface. looks almost sprayed and once I wet sand with the 2000 paper it will be awesome.

Went camping this weekend and really caused a stir in the campground when we arrived. the green needs a couple of more coats.

I love that paint scheme, it’s kind of a paint on Decoliner! The creativity never stops.

Adam,

Most interesting. I had never heard of the roller and tip method of painting. Turns out I have done spray and tip on house walls but only because I am a lousy spray painter. Ha.

I understand this is a lot of work because as you said, there is a lot of surface to cover. Always good to see big projects coming together. Thank you sharing.

Did you mask for the design? I know some can just freehand complex designs.

Joe - I started with the yellow colour (butter mint) I chose Dulux brand paint it is a High gloss polyurathane paint. according to the internet the other brand to purchase is interlux brand. both say they are good for above the water line. Dulux was easily available and on sale.
I first drew the design using MS paint and somebody's "design your own gmc" template from the photosite. then I eyeballed that to the side of Pheobe with a pencil. taped some big paper bags on and cut them out to make both side almost the same. I did 3 coats on the sides sanding between coats. I had hoped 3 would be enough. the end caps and roof currently only have 2 coats and the green (twisted mint) is first coat. we had to go camping and I ran out of time.

when it comes to laying the paint you can only work in about a 1 foot square before the paint gets too tacky to flatten. first roller on some paint. more then you would do on a house wall. then before the bubbles break knock them off with a mostly dry brush. I sometimes used a brush with just a touch of thinner or a brush with paint on it. depends on the weather. the trick is to have a light enough touch to not put brush strocks into the paint. I will be sanding those out Smile
if the fog rolls in your last 2 hours of work will be ruined. I will need to redo most of the drivers side.

I did not tape for the yellow colour just ran the roller past the pencil line and feathered it out. the green was taped and that will be the hard part of getting it re-taped the same. I have been about 15 days doing the paint, even though it is tacky in seconds it takes 11 to 20 hours to dry between coats, and I have a rare lung disease and can not work very fast.

the design is a combo of two thoughts. the "fenders" on the bottom are based on the gornicke bus from the movie "RV" the top part is the mask of the lone ranger. cause Phoebe is just that cool. (Phoebe is the motorhome = Palm Beach- P.B. - Phoebe Buffay- P.B.)

Thanks for the details.

I had been contemplating the roller method championed in the "$50 paint job" of hot rod magazine fame, only they recommended a lot more coats and a lot more sanding. Your method sounds faster.

I only have a 23 footer, so it can't take that long... Shocked

Adam, I painted a sailboat several years ago with the roll and tip method. I used Sterling two part paint. The white topsides were a no brainer. I told people that I could have driven by at 20 mph with a baggie full of white paint and threw it at the boat and it would have cured out perfectly shiny and smooth. White is easy, that is for sure. You use a badger hair brush, as I recall. Now, the hull was Hunter Green and that needed good conditions. But needed to be quick with the "tipping". The paint has a period of time before you can use it....it has to "cook" a bit. I had actually thought about trying this one my MH.....
