Looking at page 392 of the GMC Assembly Manual it shows a tape between
the floor and the carpet, and it seems as if the staples are holding
down the tape, and not the carpet. Anyone who has updated their floor
want to chime in, on what they found?

Peer,
What is the document number in the lower right corner of the page your are referencing. I have an original assembly manual set and it does not have page numbers.

JR,
Peer has an electronic version of the Assembly Manual, if you open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader on the top row there is an UP arrow
and a DOWN arrow, next to that is a block with the number 1 in it and next to that is 917. That means you're looking at page 1 of
917. If you type 392 into the block where the number 1 is and hit Enter it will take you to a drawing of the carpet installation.
BOOK 70 - 1K5 7 is the drawing number.
