That's new one on me. Have seen the Caspro stabilizers with springs but never that one. Interesting where the spring goes on the slack side? Bandaide for not enough caster?

Yes, its a steering stabilizer that was popular back in the 70s and 80s. I forget the name of the brand.
They worked pretty well if installed correctly and the alignment was spot on. They were probably most beneficial to Dodge chassis
BUT if a spring broke [usually at the eye hook] it sent the coach violently to one side
I preferred the Steersafe unit which used compressive flat wound springs as it was safer, more durable and easier to install. We sold many at Lazydays
I put on a number of both of these but never on a GMC.

I had a setup like that on a '71 Wiinniebago that had an M 300 Dodge chassis under it. I remember a vendor trying to convince me I needed it on the GMC back in '87 to keep the wheels tracking straight , in my opinion I didn't feel I needed it.

That looks like a product from Steersafe.com out of NM. I used one on a Ford Class C and quite liked it.Tamed the wandering nature of the I beam axle! the Steersafe is designed so that if one spring breaks it just reverts to a condition as though the unit didn't exist and will not pull one way or the other.

Defently a Steersafe.. I use to install tons of these back in the 80's ... Front wheel drive? Never got any request for them back in the days...
Presonally I do not see the need on front wheel drive.. Use to help in high winds and keeping the coach tracking straight... P-30's always seem to need the..

Memory getting bad...Im bassackwards with the names as this IS a Steersafe.
Now I cant remember the name of the one I preferred with a P30, maybe someone else will.
The one Im recalling was center mounted, no hydraulics, and had opposed flat wound compression springs.
BTW. is there an upgrade for the stock steering stabilizer shock. Mine seems worn when I disconnected one end but still seems pretty stable.
Only issue Ive had is when a semi passes and the air pressure wave hits, but that is inherent I think.

I installed a product called Safe-T-Plus which looks like a large steering damper. The old steering damper is removed and junked and you have to bend the old damper mounting brackets out of the way, or cut them off. Mounting is fairly easy and took me about two hours - would be a lot quicker if the vehicle was on a hoist. The hardest part is setting the center position, which is by trial and error. I'm quite pleased with the result and the steering has a lot more self centering. I believe they are available from Camping World.

Norm,
And you paid how much to replace a $40 or less stock Moog SSD-55 steering shock absorber? The stock one has always worked well for me. Have seen several coaches that had the original mounts cut off and worn out Safe-T-Steer units. Had to make up new stock mounts to remount the original steering shock, but it is your money as long as your happy.

Don't remember how much but I know it was a hell of a lot more than $40.00!! It's not only a damper, but I understand heavy springs tend to hold the steering "on center". I've had it for a couple of years with no issues, including a trip up to Alaska and down to California, and I like the feel better than the original shock; but that's a personal preference and it may not be for everyone. Not sure how good the "limited lifetime warranty" is and hope I don't need to find out.

The cost from CW is $398 + Tax + Shipping and that will put you in the $425 to $440 range and that is the lowest price range that I have found. Part number for dampener is Model 31-140 (silver) and the mounting hardware part# G-315K.

Those products are for chassis that are overloaded and need help to stay
centered. On a GMC it's not only not needed but trying to line up
centering on it AND our steering box is difficult and if it gets out it
really messes things up. Had a guy who had just gotten one... drank the
punch over at lazy Dayz, brought it to me.. was driving horrible... After
checking everything we disconnected that thing, lined up the coach and it
was perfect.... guys was not happy after just spending big bucks on it...
