My Explorer came with one. I think it is cool. BUT, Firestone refused to do my oil change because they couldn't be held liable if it broke. They lost my business (12+ years same location) over this.

I had the dealer remove it anyway, when I had my next oil change at the Ford Fast Lane, because it sorta made me nervous that something could snag it an pop it open, or the spring could break, or??? and drain all my oil out.

I may put on on my Honda EV-4010. The damn oil gets all over the place when I change it...

I installed one on my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.0 Benz diesel in it.
The valve lives under a steel skid plate and accessible thru a hole in the
plate. They come with some kind of lock ring but I use safety wire to keep
it closed. All my vehicles have some kind of skid plate. Makes changing
oil so much easier. But............with the GMC that low........probably
not.

Unscrewing the plug is the easiest part of the oil change. The greasing part of the job is the only difficult part. I would never add another fail mode to the oil system.

Almost all GM vehicles are designed so that the engine and/or transmission pan is at the road surface with the suspension in full jounce with all the jounce bumpers missing. (metal to metal) I'd be cautious about having anything sticking too low.

And with the male threads extending up past the pan bung, you drain out even less of the bottom of pan sludge.

I've always wanted one but just can't bring myself to trust it. I've had plenty of buddies use them with great success.
I'm sure it's perfectly reliable, but somewhere in the back of my head it says "but WHAT IF"
What if a rock hits it? What it f a piece of semi tire hits it at 70? What if I run off the road and slide on the pan for a second?
Etc.
I'll just get a little grease on my hand so I don't have to be constantly worried about it.

Most of us probably spend more procrastination time trying to decide when
we should change the oil, than it takes to unscrew the pan plug. (Grin) I
can't see any advantage over a threaded plug for me. Now, if you really
want to come up with something neat, do an oil filter with one of those
things on it so a person doesn't get a bath of hot oil down his arm when
unscrewing one full to the top. Now that's a mess for sure. One that I hate.

Jim H.,
Punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain out.
