I cant find my GMCMHI partsbook.
Can someone please direct me to Onan points part number. Early 1976- the one that requires a mirror to see.
I'm going to a Cummins/Onan shop today. I can't read the model or serial # on the onan to give them correct info.
Thanks

Gene,
Why would you want to replace the old style when the later style is so much
easier to adjust? That innocent question without even trying to convince
you to go to the MUCH better (and probably cheaper) flywheel-driven
Pertronix mod. :-)

There are two fundamentally different and incompatible points systems found on the Onans. One has the points located on the vertical wall of a metal box with a side-access cover plate and the other design has the points mounted on the block with an aluminum access cover over top of everything. You cannot interchange parts between the two (other than perhaps the condenser).

Hi Rob,
Does Jim provide a cover to go along with the assembly you referenced?
The early points are situated in a metal box that has a removable side cover for access. The points you linked to are a design that does not use the box and has a different type of cover to keep everything isolated from the environment. The two aren’t compatible; I learned this from experience this since I have 6 Onans of different vintages and have had to deal with both types of systems when repairing these units.
I know where you are coming from with the smacked pertronix. In my case I had fabricated an ultra-rigid pertronix mount - so rigid that the wind from the flywheel caused the pertronix to vibrate enough that its aluminum mounting tab fatigued and broke in half after 45 hours of operation. It took some shots from the flywheel but is still electrically functional.
Retaining the points after a pertronix upgrade is a great idea - it saved my bacon just a couple of weeks ago. In my case I'm installing a switch to make it easy to choose between the two without having to make wiring changes.

While in an Onan thread: Another bridge rectifier bit the dust last week.
A friend called that he had a hot ride home through GA heat because the
Onan quit. He reported that he couldn't push in the CB on the Onan, so I
had him check the input voltage -- NADA. When he finally got the bridge
rectifier out, the terminal turned in the connector block, and his spare
rectifier installed, all's good again. I was holding my breath until he
called back, thinking he might have to call Jim. :-)
If you don't carry a spare bridge rectifier, you should. it's not that
difficult to install and is probably the most frequent cause of "No 120
vac". I usually have 25A 400+VDC bridges with me at rallies since I used
them in the electric wiper wiring harnesses. The wipers don't need
anywhere near those high ratings but the cost differential is so little
that I just use them, giving every electric wiper owner an on-board Onan
spare (providing it doesn't rain at the same time).

Great point Ken; new bridges are inexpensive and are good insurance against a spoiled trip.
Did your friend’s Onan have the original bridge installed or had he replaced it previously?

Jim,
The photo in JimK's catalog shows only the points, bracket, and condenser as a guess I'd say it doesn't come with a cover.
JimB gave me the whole shebang, including the cover.

Hi Rob,
If it doesn’t come with a cover then it cannot be used as a retrofit for the old style enclosed-in-a-box points. You’d have to fabricate your own cover and if you were going to do that then you might as well install a pertronix and leave the old points in place as a backup. I love my pertronix but I find comfort in knowing the points are still there if I need them in an emergency.

JIm,
I presume it was original because he had no idea how to replace it and had
to modify the connector.
Claims they didn't shut down with the A/C going.
