I have cut the new headliner (FRP 0.09" thick from Lowe's) to the size
of the old headliner plus an inch on both sides. That didn't fit at all.
Removed half an inch on both sides, and it still bowes.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6843-new-headliner.html
Do I not push the headliner far enough into the side slides, or is it
possible, that I need to cut another half inch off on both side, as
maybe the California weather didn't cause any shrinking to speak off to
the old headliner.
I am really baffled and at my wits' end. Any and all help is greatly
appreciated.

Peer,
Sounds like the OEM headliner panels fit correctly so that's how long you
need the FRP to be. It should snap into place and stay there, like an arch.

Rob's suggestion is right on. The length should be approximately 74", then trim to fit, little at a time. They will snap to the roof and stay up with minimal effort. I think that the dimensions of a 40 year old coach may have shifted a bit. I would use the removed headliner as an approximate size, add to the width dimension and trim to the snap.
How do you plan to trim out the seams?

Seems my coach really hasn't followed the average Usonian's weight
development with time :*) and stayed true to his original size.
I removed approximately 1/4 of an inch on both sides again, leaving the
added width to 1/4" per side.
Looks much better. And will probably leave the rear one at that, if
nothing unforeseen is happening.

For now, I plan on reusing the old trim. Still looks good. If it doesn't
work out, I'll hit Lowe's tomorrow and probably get something from
there. Got a couple of suggestions in the other thread.

G'day Peer,
When we replaced our roof lining we cut it for a tight fit. We had to hook the ends into the wall channel and gently push it over center untill it popped into place.
It looked OK but, didn't quite follow the curve, yes the cabinets, roof vent surrounds etc would all help. Not wanting to pull it down again if I was wrong, I ran a thin bead of silicone along the roof ribs and propped the sheets up overnight.
That was 10 years ago, I'm so glad I did it that way. We have had to go into the roof a couple of times,TV antenna C.B. aerial etc. A house hold knife was all that was required to brake the silicone's adhesion to gain access.

Updated the photo album.
Gents,
thank you very much. You made me a very happy man. I was very beat down
by the fact that things did not go according to plan. Now, with the
removal of a bit of the access width, everything is like I want it. Of
course, I made a booboo by not properly aligning the sheet, but I am
pretty certain that it won't cause issues down the line.
See
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/new-headliner/p58930-no-more-sagging.html
for the result.
Thanks again!

Congratulations. I’ve been overjoyed with my FRP ceiling and hope that in the long term you are too. Hopefully people that come across your photo album in the future will find the “Success” picture and not get discouraged instead by the adjacent “Does not hold up” pictures. As Ken pointed out it is indeed a fine line between too short and too long on the panels' longitudinal dimension.

That's why I added the success as well. I've seen so many positive
photos and blog entries about this, that I really got discouraged by my
own inability to do this. Now I am much more confident, that I'll get
the things sorted out.
Tomorrow morning will be the next, and when all are up, I'll do the
cutting of the holes for the lights and cupboards, and the hanging of
the cupboards. And when all that is completed, I have achieved the most
feared part of my journey :)

In putting my headliner up (Masonite), I discovered it worked better if I started on one side and pushed it up, working it across. Eventually, the material, whatever it is, has to reverse like an oil can in a body panel. Basically, the length (74" or so) has to somehow pass through the direct distance between the ends, which is shorter. This is the old 'the shortest distance between points is a straight line' law. So you start with it hanging down and hooked on the extrusion and push it up on one side making a kind of wave. That seems to help it 'snap' up the roof arch. At least it did for me.

Hello Pete,
> glad to see you got it right. A good headlining goes a long way to improve an interior.
Oh yes, it lights everything up!
> Are you planning on touring again this year?
No. My family and I plan a trip in April next year. NYC, Niagara Falls,
Boston, NYC. Just a short, 2 week and a bit, trip.
Hopefully my friend that hosts my GMC is able to take the coach out for
a spin in the rest of the year
After I get this stupid thing with the Certificate Of Title sorted out!
